Diner morning news: Too many problems in Big D

Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas reports for the second consecutive week, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked on his own show about (Wade) Phillips' job status.

"Under no circumstances would I make a change," Jones said. "We've got a chance to get a lot of things done and we've got a lot of football left to play and we've got some good people that not only can play it, but coach it."

Jerry never answered the essential question: What’s it going to take for Wade to keep his job beyond this year? Keeping him this season is no big deal since the team is not bad enough to fire him, but clearly -- at least in my mind -- it’s not talented enough to win a Super Bowl. On tape, the Chiefs game proved to me that the Cowboys have to make giant strides on both sides of the ball to compete at the highest level in the NFL. They have too many weaknesses that appear from time to time — in every game. Their lack of safety play, their lack of corners (including Terence Newman), their lack of receivers and their inconsistency at left tackle are all huge concerns that appear to be exploited in every game.

Patrick Crayton has gone down faster than any player I’ve seen in a very long time. He has no juice left in his legs, appears to have lost his quickness and doesn’t show any skills that make him tough to cover. He’s easily covered by any team’s fourth of fifth corner right now.

Maybe things will change after the bye week — but I doubt it. These are flaws that are hard to change during the season and are easily attacked by good opponents.

Crayton is quicker than he has ever been. He had one bad game and that means he has no juice left in his legs? He has even had a couple of clutch first down catches called back this season due to penalties. He'll be alright, especially if we use him as the third receiver. I don't mind criticism if the facts are straight.

He's normally kinda credible. He called the Dolphins over the Jets on Monday night and it really caught my attention when he said it. I thought he must have really had some insider info or watched a lot of film.

With that said, I dont want to say he hasn't watched film on the Cowboys but I thought the word on the street was that Crayton was playing faster this year.

I guess Crayton wore out his legs training with Michael Johnson in the off-season. I mean, how can someone go from being very fast and quick as recent as week two (He really broke out in week 1) to having "no juice in his legs" in week 5?

I don't know but something's got to shake from this...

I think its pretty obvious why Lombardi isnt employed in the NFL any longer.

Not only that, but if you ever listen to Simmons podcast, he can't pronounce half the players names...

He is right about the team not being good enough in the secondary and at LT. The fact that he cant pronounce the names is beside the point. Crayton is not a difference maker so what difference what he says about his legs. I seem to recall alot of people on the boards being off the Crayton band wagon last weekend.

Well, Crayton is apparently getting replaced by a more talented, explosive player, so what difference does it make?

Funny, if we suck that bad and are so easily attacked by good teams, why did we barely lose to two undefeated teams?

Guess they were just being nice to us.

He's right that the Cowboys are exploited on certain levels every single week it seems more and more teams are able to take advantage of Dallas routine mistakes and specific deficiencies.

It's gotton to the point that the same old problems in all of these games from the same personel are mundane and often expected.

It means he is just making a bunch of stuff up, based off a couple plays some intern brings him to watch, like the rest of the "analyst's". It should be obvious to anyone who's watched Crayton play this year, that he looks much quicker.

I saw him do the Dal-Car playbook show, and he showed one clip on Delhomme which proved to him how well he proctects the ball and that they were going to win the game because of it. Yet in real life Delhomme had thrown 10 ints in his last 3 games. As said above, there shouldn't be any wonder why he doens't have a job in the NFL.

 Some of you jump on anyone who criticizes the Cowboys.

Where is this great speed from Crayton? Both he and Roy Williams look like they're running in mud sometimes. He had the 80 yd play against TB, and virtually nothing since.

The mistake Lombardi makes is that he says Crayton has gone down. When has he ever been up? He's always been just a guy out there, and right now, he's not even that.

And he's also dead on about the secondary. Other than Jenkins and Sensabaugh before he got hurt, the secondary has looked like garbage. Including and especially Newman.

You'd think the continuing mediocrity from this team would open some fan's eyes that these aren't negative articles, they're just the truth about our team. 9-7 3 out of the last 4 years should make it obvious. So should losing 12 of the last 25.

What GM in their right mind is going to answer this "essential question" barely a quarter into the season?

You can't argue this point. Until we actually beat quality opponents, it is a legitimate question. And it is very difficult to switch gears midseason.

I'm sure the Giants and Broncos wouldn't honestly claim that their wins were easy.

Off the top of my head, Jenkins gave up TDs to Carolina and the Chiefs. I think TNew has given up 2 TD's on the year as well, though I'm not positive.
