I got an e-mail from someone who certainly thinks so. Expect it to be the day 2 guys going first. They usually go in almost reverse order.

Here's hoping.

It would be nice to see some signings. I'll never understand why Jerry and Stephen wait so long.

I think they do it just because thats how they do it.

No real rush to sign a guy early when you can see what comparable picks are getting.

I guess I can understand them letting the market set itself first as a reason. It just makes it seem like we will have holdouts every year. lol

I mean really, what kind of market needs to be set for 7th round picks?

I feel confident that Jones will get everyone signed as normal before the start of camp.

I'd take the money a 7th rd pick makes.

Well, duh. Most of the country would take a 250,000 salary.

But what kind of market needs to be set for 7th round picks? They generally get the minimum. A market doesn't need to be set for them. Its usually the minimum, no?

If I remember correctly, the late round guys get signed rather quickly, even multiple getting done a day. The first round guys for the Cowboys usually dont get done until the last couple days before camp.

As I understand it the Jones' believe they need that leverage of camp opening, and most other teams picks being signed to avoid prolonged negotiations. Its not a bad thought.

They want urgency. Their thinking is that if they start negotiating in June its still going to be a few days from camp opening before they sign so why put everyone through that agony.

Yet we hardly ever seem to have rookie holdouts. Maybe a guy misses the morning workout on the first day of camp, but I don't recall an extended holdout for a rookie in quite a while.

The pressure and urgency of camp looming makes for productive negotiations. Any negotiations in June would be totally worthless, as neither side is willing to strike a deal at that point, not knowing what the market is going to end up at.

I think Jerry/Stephen really knows what he's doing here and has developed a system that he's confident in, even though it seems "last minute" to us fans.

I doubt they wait until the last minute to start talking. I'm sure Stephen has been talking numbers with the agents.

I think the team has said repeatedly that they like to have a short window for completing deals - there really isn't much to negotiate with most picks -- pretty much everyone knows what they are going to get -- I expect Stephen is talking more to the GMs in Carolina and NO to confirm how much of an increase everyone is expecting over last years salaries for the slots. With these late round guys, I doubt that there is much back and forth - standard deals with a standard increase over the previous year's pick in that spot. They probably spend more time collecting signatures than negotiating with the late round guys.

Draft picks

The Cowboys are in the process of finishing up some deals with some of their draft picks. The team is trying to get their seventh-round picks, Alan Ball and Courtney Brown, finished first then move on. Rookie fullback Deon Anderson and his agent were talking to the Cowboys last week, so that deal might get done soon.

The team hasn't started talks with rookie wide receiver Isaiah Stanback.

Don't expect things to get done with first-round pick Anthony Spencer until early next week.

That's how it goes in the NFL. Slow.

I'm pretty sure that I heard that they wait on the contracts because of injury concerns, as well... if a player has a serious injury in the offseason after signing his contract, then the Cowboys are obliged to give more compensation contractually... if they get hurt without a contract, then they have much more latitude in compensation...

i don't think if that is correct. if it were you would never have guys attend minicamps - after all, that is where they would most likely get hurt, right?
