What about the tendon damage? Is that accurate? Or does it only occur if you don't know what you're doing, and balloon yourself up to cartoonish proportions?

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject, btw.

Tendon damage occurs when your muscles outpace your connective tissue. Steroids act on muscles, not tendons, ligaments...they need much longer to grow.

So it is accurate that taking steroids can cause you to weaken your tendons because you blew your muscles up at an unrealistic rate. I wonder if HGH has similar side effects.

I love how everybody was blasting Bonds, but now that Clemens has been exposed, everybody has suddenly become sympathetic.

He admitted this a couple of months ago on the show. i'm suprised he brought it up again.

Yeah, this is like the 3rd time he's mentioned it on the show. So, it's old news.

Hostile: hats off to you for keeping it real. Anabolic steroids have taken on a palor of late for some unknown reason. I don't want to ramble about it or beat a dead horse, but....
I think the school of thought that taking them is cheating is really pretty closed minded. Here's why I say that: I too played college football for both 1a and 1aa schools. A few of the players on the 1aa team used steroids...most didn't, but only because they couldn't afford them. Back then, EVERYONE would use them if they could acquire them. The 1a school was different. I didn't know anyone who DIDN'T use them. That's right....even our kicker. Keep in mind there are different results from different drugs. Some build big bulk, others will hardly add 2 lbs over a cycle, but will GREATLY enhance stamina and regeneration. Along those lines, several basketball players were heavy users with no regard for health concerns. I say all this to make a point that, regardless of how bad people want to portray the drugs, they are a fact of life in ALL professional sports and further, they are probably necessary to even compete on a level field. I (and some others on this board) have been exposed to sports on the college level....are we to really believe that college players use the drugs to get to the pro level, then stop in order to be "fair"?? Nope. As for HGH, that is a whole other topic and a completely different class of drug. For the record, there has never been a study of any kind conducted on long term health issues suffered by anabolic steroid users, so the argument about causing cancer, so on and so forth is complete speculation. ZERO data about long term use. A plethora of short term side effects, but all seem to cease when use ceases. End chapter 1.:)
Good post.

I hate admitting how close I was to being a "cheater." I'm not trying to excuse it. I didn't see it as cheating when I was considering it. It's sort of hard to explain. There was definitely internal turmoil about it. I knew it was wrong even though I knew there was no testing for it. I still knew it would help me get something I wanted as badly as anything I ever have.

They are? I must have missed that. He's getting raked over the coals everywhere I look.

For the record, Bonds admitted to taking banned substances. Clemens has not.

Want to clarify one thing that players say when "caught" that is bogus. That is, that the player took the anabolic steroid to recover from an injury. These drugs don't work that way....for the most part. They do speed recovery from physical workouts, but not injury. Their mechanism is to draw fluid (water) to inside the muscle tissue (appearance of growth)...it doesn't regenerate large tears, strains, pulls, etc. Only the microscopic tears associated with workouts and the like. If Golic said he used them to "recover" from injury, he is either lying or ignorant of their actions completely. I'd venture to say the former...just sounds better than saying : "I wanted to maintain my play as I aged"

When a person is trying to recover from an injury they often times have to re-strengthen muscle groups that got weak as a result of their injuries. They work out to re-build those muscles to what they once were. Taking a performance enhancing drug does not repair damaged areas as you said, but it does aid in re-building strength in those muscles. I think that is what it means when a person uses these drugs to recover from an injury.

All this press has made me start to look at old NFL guys and just wonder, I have no proof but like any other person two that have caught my eye are a former UT rb from Tyler and Moose Johnson. I have no proof and it was along time ago but if you look at MJ on tv he looks like a different guy, look at him if you don't believe and decide for yourself. I'm not trying to slander anybody but there are many others you start wondering about. They had to be totally prevalent in the NFL back a few years. You guys got anybody you might have seen lately you now wonder about??

I seriously doubt Earl Campbell ever did steroids. He has admitted he barely ever worked out. The guy was just built powerfully. Even now he looks bulky.

I don't doubt steroids were in use by many players. There is a reason the NFL began a testing policy. They knew things were becoming a problem and they had to address it in some fashion. To me, Randy White always seemed like a possible candidate of steroids use. I hope not.

No. Connective tissue isn't weakened. Muscle growth outpaces connective tissue growth, thus the damage you speak of...not common, tho. Tendons don't lose strength...just can't keep up. Might happen to novice users...biggest gains always on first use...less and less from future uses...or players take larger doses to compensate for lack of effectiveness
