Mike Mayock doesn't hide his contempt for draft's circus atmosphere

While the coverage itself was for sure bad, the obscene amount and length of commercials was the worst part for me. There were times where tv was 3-4 picks behind which is a joke. And was it just me or did it go to commercial and leave us in suspense every time the cowboys pick was in?

As with most things, popularity has turned it into a spectacle. I miss the days when only "football nerds" cared about the draft and they didn't spread it out so much. I loved hunkering down for the 1st 3 rounds in 1 day

I've been watching the draft for decades. This was by far the worst coverage ever, both ESPN AND NFL NETWORK.....All glitter and no substance. Sad really. TBH, I'm kinda pissed about it. At times it was EXTREMELY hard to watch. Goodell really knows how to **** things up.
Amen.

Unfortunately our own owner is one of the biggest culprits for trying to reach all audiences and making the draft come off like some "Entertainment Tonight event. The NFL power owners, like Jerry, Craft, etc... are so consumed with growing the Game, they forget about some the traditions, like the draft, that make the game great.

I missed his little tirade.

What's funny is that I switched to ESPN, because I got tired of Mayock selling product. Seems like all he ever talked about was how great each player could be and even caught himself and backtracked when he talked about a players weekness. And this was deep into day 2.

Mabey he got told to be that way, and "Is this good TV" was him not being able to take it anymore

Yeah being on a lag the entire draft and having to actually wait till after commercial breaks for picks was disgusting...

If you want sideshow make it the last day of the draft to help draw viewers to watch guys who will be fighting for back up jobs/ special teams I get it..

But get the 1st day back to the first 3 rounds and dont cheapen it... Those are the money rounds where teams will find superstars and quality starters

Circus is the right word for it. Just make the pick and move on.

Delay after delay just made the draft drag on forever. Way more painful than it needed to be.

How many freaking times did the crowd have to sing that stupid Fly Eagles Fly song????

When players are "walking the red carpet" and looking like The Academy Award Show it's seriously time to re-evaluate things.

The "glitz and glamour" is a reflection of our society. I really don't have any problem with it because I can simply ignore it if I want. I like the new draft format spread out over three days. I like that the draft is at night and starts on Thursday. This is how you grow your brand. We don't live in the 60s or 70s anymore.

The only things I disliked about this draft are:

1. Too much talking about Day 1 picks on Day 3. I'd like a little more discussion about the guys who were actually picked. I don't think this is too much to ask since the people who tune into the draft on Saturday are likely hard-core fans who would be more interested in knowing more about players taken in Rounds 4-7.

2. ESPN's "Let's Really Show How Discussed We are with Joe Mixon" Holier than thou Spiel (when the network has covered up for sexual harassers as long as it first start broadcasting USFL games). How many times do we need to be told that Mixon hit a woman and told that he's irredeemable? I get it. I get it. He shouldn't have. He has apologized profusely. He has given multiple interviews addressing the issue, showing contriteness every time I've heard him interviewed. When they started talking about it, I just turned the channel.

P.S. I'm glad I missed the orangutan in space segment. :)

Absolutely. Goodell has taken pretty much every tradition the NFL has had that I grew up with and perverted it.

Monday Night Football - Gone. Pretty much a trash game, no longer the must see matchup.

Overseas regular season football - Constant pandering to a mildly interested audience at the expense of robbing teams and cities stateside of games that matter.

Thursday Night Football - Creates excessive strain on the quality of the games, making short weeks and challenges for preparation only to have a poorly matched contest with bad football being played, all for the sake of color rush uniforms and a cash grab.

The Draft - Gradually has been *******ized into this disgusting grotesque circus sideshow now, dumbed down with a grandstand for idiotic fans, weepy sob stories with crippled kids, moronic red carpet events and now primates announcing picks. It started getting ruined by putting it on during prime time on Thursday. Then it got worse and worse, now it is this diseased filthy product that makes me ill to watch.

The day he is no longer the commissioner is a day I will celebrate.

I agree, although I disagree with MNF....that became trash well before Goodell becamse the commissioner. Remember that horrible triad of announcers in Paul Maguire, Joe Theismann and Mike Patrick? Or Dennis Miller announcing or how about Boomer Esiason stinking up the joint.

I def disliked how far behind the broadcast was. My friends knew the picks 2-3 ahead of what was on tv. some texted me ohh man you picked your corner great move. Thanks for ruining it when drew wasn't even on the screen yet lol
Takes time to beam up a name to the space station and have them turn around and announce it.

I was at the Early drafts in N.Y.C. with The Cowboys taking Irvine, Aikman and Smith.

They started going over the edge with moving to Madison Square Garden.
Now have gone over the top.

The owners pocket a few million more for this.

I get letting historical players announce the call for the 2nd (and maybe 3rd) rounds. But when I'm see long snapper Jim from the '95 team trotted up there, it's been stretched too far.

I love the hype of the 1st round but after that I wish we could just go back to the old way.

2nd and 3rd round are still ok for the casual fan but only us hardcores really enjoy the 4th-7th round.

My meaningless opinion on the draft:

1. I like it being 3 days because Christmas lasts 3 days. It also allows the networks to talk about the individual players and allows teams to strategize and talk about moving around. It benefits teams wanting to trade.

2. I hate the lag. When the NFL network is announcing a pick 30 minutes after everyone in the world knows who it is it is too ******* late.

3. They have time to discuss the picks with the current format, so discuss it. Don't spend every ******* available minute either talking about meaningless ****, or on commercials.

4. The analysts shouldn't be cheerl leaders. Give honest evaluation of every pick.

5. I really could care less about interviewing every ******* player. The lunatic who kept ranting while talking about his grandmother really degraded the draft in my opinion.

6. The content is so watered down the analysts really don't get an opportunity to give any meaningful evaluation of a player, team fit, needs, players they could have taken instead.

7. Oh, maybe most importantly, NEVER have the draft again in Philly. Booing is ok, but not 3 days straight on every damn pick. Seriously classless ****s. It was a distraction from a great event.

Funny that a guy who has made millions on the hyping of the NFL draft would be so against it. 20 years ago, he wouldn't be on TV and no one would have given a crap what he had to say. What a hypocrite.
