49ers offensive coordinator. He was also the Packers QB coach in '99. Possible ploy to get Favre to stay?

Packers | McCarthy selected as new head coach; deal still needs to be ironed out
Wed, 11 Jan 2006 18:09:27 -0800

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Green Bay Packers have picked San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy as their new head coach. The two sides must now negotiate a contract, but there are not expected to be any major sticking points in discussions. An official announcement is expected to come later in the week. McCarthy, 42, served as the team's quarterbacks coach in 1999.

Packers | Favre and McCarthy have past ties
Wed, 11 Jan 2006 18:09:56 -0800

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre has a past relationship with Mike McCarthy, who has been chosen as the team's new head coach. While the two sides have maintained a relationship since McCarthy was the team's quarterbacks coach in 1999, it is not believed Packers general manager Ted Thompson let that play a significant factor in the team's decision to offer McCarthy the job.

So the Packers fired a Head Coach who had proven he could win games, and opting instead for a offensive cordinator of one of the worst offenses in the NFL? Alright makes sense... Sounds like they got a coach that will bow before Brett Favre than anything. Which is just plain silly, you have to plan for the future and get a coach who makes you better down the line. I'm sure Pack fans aren't happy, at the least they should've got Rivera

I agree.

Totally mystifying selection and one meant to placate a player who will not even be around in a few seasons.

If I were a Packer fan, I would be enraged.

But I hate the Packers, so this really is outstanding news. :)

The Pack think they are getting Holmgren part II.

That's the kind of lame decision making you get when the public is your owner.

I agree, I also question the Vikings decision to go with Childress so being an NFC team I guess I should be happy. I just hope Childress was important to the Eagles, however I question his importance with the fact Reid was the play caller anyways.
