Press conference for today has been canceled

Mike Nolan and John York are currently meeting and the scheduled 4 p.m. press conference has been postponed.

OK, so what does it mean?

Well, it obviously means the Yorks are not completely convinced that Mike Nolan should be the head coach next season.

This follows the pattern.

--The 2002 season ended when the 49ers lost to the Buccaneers in the playoffs on Jan. 12, 2003. York called Steve Mariucci, who was home watching "Joe Millionaire" on TV on a Monday night. Finally, on Wednesday, Jan. 15, York fired Mariucci during a meeting that was so long that everybody knew Mariucci had been fired before he left York's office. In fact, Mariucci's wife heard the news on the radio and immediately drove to the 49ers' offices. She was waiting for her husband in his office.

--The 2004 season ended with a road loss to the Patriots on Jan. 2, 2005. York held extensive meetings with Terry Donahue and Dennis Erickson. Finally, on Jan. 6, York decided to fire both men.

So, again, this is the question: What does all this mean?

UPDATE
: The meeting includes Jed York, too.

UPDATE (5:43 p.m.):
The 49ers assistant coaches are leaving for the night. Nobody has been told anything about what's going on. When asked if he's heard from the Falcons or Ravens, Mike Singletary said he hasn't heard anything. Then, he good-naturedly recommended we go home and spend New Year's Eve with our families.

Interesting and wouldn't surprise me either. The 49ers looked disgusting this year with the exception of Hill and Patrick Willis.

I'd be shocked if Mike Singletary doesn't end up as a head coach in the NFL somewhere this year, either with the 49ers, Falcons or Ravens.

A point I made back when the suit flap was in full debate mode in the summer. I would rather a coach dress like Mumbles and win, than Nolan and lose.

With the start of any new season there is a certain level of expectation. This year SF not only didn't meet those expectations, they really regressed. I can see Nolan staying with a new set of asst coaches on offense. But I can also see the York's letting him go after all, I was surprised when they let Mooch go.

That's what you get when you over-pay a 3rd tier QB, who should've been a walk on backing up the mascot.

He'll be a potent defensive coordinator with someone next season if he's axed.

I suspect Rex Ryan will be promoted in Baltimore, perhaps he'll pick up where he left off with the Ravens.

That was partly caused by SD getting Norv so late in the process it hurt the 49ers and they handed a job over to someone I am not sure they wanted to

Nolan is a somewhat overrated DC. Certainly not worthy of his status amongst most fans.

Singletary might be on the short list of candidates for the Baltimore HC spot.

Looks like he may stay but will have to give up power of personnel decisions.
