NFL is going to experiment with 8 man crews in the pre-season again. Really? Hope it remains an experiment only.

A new NFL referee this year, Brad Allen, who goes straight to the referee position from the ACC. I like the idea. 3 new referees total.

For those asking about Mike Carey, I am thrilled he is going to CBS. Both of us will try to teach and make the game easier to understand.

Interesting day at NFL officiating clinic. Biggest point of emphasis for 2014..Illegal contact and defensive holding. More offense!

Last time the NFL had this as a major emphasis was 2004 and the number of illegal contact fouls went from 79 to 191.

The League average last season was 48 points per game. I think that was an all-time record. How about a littlle balance.

NFL says they are offsetting this emphasis with an emphasis on calling offensive pass interference. Not an even trade in my opinion.

Honestly, I don't remember there being so many points of emphasis. Also, false starts, taunting, and others. I cover more later.

Btw, officials were shown many plays regarding illegal contact and defensive holding. How many Seahawk plays???. None.

2nd day at the officiating clinic. Mostly instant replay today. Love the changes involving New York in the decisions.

They are going to live by the mantra that a ruling on the field will not be reversed until there is absolutely clear video evidence.

The goal is that when TV comes back from their break, the referee will be ready to make the announcement. So much for my airtime!

Regarding the N-word controversy, no rule was proposed. As expected, it is already covered in rule 12. If it is used in an "abusive,(cont)
threatening, or insulting manner to opponents or officials," officials are to call a foul. That was emphasized to the officials.

I don't like it.

More penalties just take away from the game experience, IMO.

I would prefer to let them be more physical, not less.

Maybe Ware really will have a big year in Denver, because back in his prime they allowed OLinemen to hold him on basically all plays. He'll get a lot more calls in his favor being in Denver than being in Dallas.

I guess they want more 51-48 games.

For that, they might as well have just watched all Dez's end zone routes for the whole season. If they actually start calling those, either Dez breaks the TD record or we find out about goal line offense real quick.

Good point. Maybe he'll break the sack record and we can hear the crying of one Jerry Jones.

It seems they make certain things a point of emphasis to the degree that the officials get ticky-tack with the call, but then there are other things like holding Ware that are just ignored.

I'd drop the whole point of emphasis thing and tell them to just call what you see that violates the rules.

That contact stuff is directed at Seattle.

I expect they go with points of emphasis when they see that some of the harder judgement calls are leaning toward no-calls. I think many of the NFC teams were complaining about how physical Seattle played with receivers off the ball. So either you deal with that or you end up with everyone copying it.

And the use of instant replay would have a lot of flags picked for him being called off sides.

But it will probably get called on Dallas. We'll call if the "Seattle-Dallas" rule, to go along with the Michael Irvin "push off" rule, Emmitt "helmet rule" and Marion Barber "leading with the head" rule.

Yes, everything the league does is to screw the Cowboys.

Don't y'all get tired of the unending conspiracy theories?
