Nebraska shocked the college football world Thursday, suddenly announcing the hire of longtime Oregon State head coach Mike Riley. Riley replaces Bo Pelini, who was fired after a 67-27 record in seven seasons with the Cornhuskers.

Riley has been with Oregon State since 1997, making eight bowl games in 14 years, with four ranked finishes. Pelini was often criticized for being unable to clear the four-loss hump with the Cornhuskers. Riley has lost four or more games every year in Corvallis since 2003. Pelini was also criticized for being unable to win big games. Riley is 4-21 against top 10 teams and 14-41 against top 25 teams in his career. However, his staff already capably recruits Texas, which is one market Nebraska needs to get back into after moving to the Big Ten.

I don't understand the move at all and I can understand firing Pelini. To Riley's credit, the talent pool is smaller and the ability to get talent at Oregon State is far harder than at Nebraska. But, it's not exactly an inspiring hire.

Kind of shocked me. I don't even think he was one of the many names that were tossed around for the job.

I hope they did not hire him just because he is a nice guy.

Bret Bielema offered Nebraska job before Mike Riley

When rumors began to surface that Nebraska was targeting Arkansas coach Bret Bielema as its new coach Wednesday, it didn't take long for Bielema to use social media as a vehicle to stem the grapevine:

In retrospect the guy has a history of putting together solid passing games... and since Nebraska D was the problem, he does have a history of being a DB coach as well. Considering that OSU didn't even register on the national radar before him and Erickson tag-teamed them to being solid.... Maybe he might bring them back... But man, will Nebraska ever be National Championship level again?

Curious to see how Michigan handle their opening, been hearing Griese and Carr has a lot to do with the search, and Miles and Harbaugh won't be a part of the process.... Should have hired Les Miles the first time...

Nebraska has a really uphill battle in recruiting Texas now that they joined the B1G but it can't hurt to try.
Not sure what they are going for. Riley's a mid-level coach.

Michigan needs to simply money-whip a big-time coach. If they can't get back to recruiting nationally they've got no shot.
They should toss Saban like money at Miles. Get a recruiter and defensive-minded guy who will play well in the cold elements.

Michigan recruiting has been fine.... Hoke had top classes every year... As well as Rich Rod left talent when he left as well.... (6, 8, and 18 the last three years... 18 because, he was in trouble of course.......not to mention, that's espn's rankings, rivals has the 6, 8 classes higher)
recruiting isn't the issue.

I have always loved Mike Riley. OSU will suffer without him. He has done so much with so little. If the talent pool doesn't change it'll get much worse for OSU. Mike Riley did not get support he felt he needed to succeed. Like plane tickets from Corvalis to Portland to recruit. I just saw a picture of him and the Nebraska jet. I think he will bring Nebraska back to the top.
