Does anyone know his contract status? He's been one of the few bright spots on the 9'ers defense.

He played pretty well yesterday, made more plays than he gave up and did a good job in man to man coverage.

Anyone know if he's approaching free agency next year?

him and tony parrish are both beasts, but I dont think either is a fa anytime soon. Rumph is actually a corner converted to FS which is something we direly need to do.

Don't you want the guy in your sig pic drafted to be the next free safety?

Actually he was drafted the same year as Roy. So if he signed a 4 year deal he would be a free agent after this year.

And he not only covered well, but he's a pretty physical player as well. I think he caused JJ to fumble.

Interestingly enough, Rumph was drafted as a CB, some of you may recall. 27th pick in the 02 draft, I believe.

Kinda reminds me of a simular situation SF employeed some 20 years earlier. It will be interesting to see what SF elects to do with Rumph next year.

rumph plays a lot better at FS it seems, so id be really surprised if that wasnt his career spot from now on. sf has some good young corners as well.

Rumph pretty much had to move to safety... He got beat like a rented mule at corner. ;)

Yet another "bigger" corner that teams plan to take on the big receivers, but who isn't fast or athletic enough to cover.

(And just so no one misunderstands, that was in no way a shot at Anthony Henry. :))

Players like Michael Huff, Jimmy Williams, and Jason Allen can play at CB or S. I think that most would want a shot at being drafted as CB rather than S because CB usually go a little higher in the draft and over the course of a career tend to make more money than Safeties.

doesnt remind me of that at all...Ronnie Lott was a good football player at CB who moved to s and became great...Miek Rumph was a horrendous CB and a below average safety

I was not all that impressed with Lott at CB but, he absolutaly made a name for himself at Safety.

As for Rumph, well, I did not say that he reminded me of Lott, per say. Only that they have done this before and it has worked out for them. It will be interesting to see how the team views Rumph when his contract is up, in light of the fact that Lott worked out.

That is the line of thought I was try to get out there.

I'm pretty sure Lott made a the Pro Bowl at CB. And after watching the game again Rumph made more then his share of plays. The 9'ers are out of salary cap jail and can spend a little money to get players in FA and keep some of their own.

He's better than what we have now that's for sure.

SF has manipulated their defensive backs frequently throughout the years and with great success. Ronnie Lott as you referenced, but also Merton Hanks, Marques Pope, and now Rumph.

Rumph and Parrish are an excellent tandem and Plummer, Young, Peterson, and even Carter are solid defensive players. I even like SF's OL (that is, it's not a liability)-- but clearly they are limited at RB, TE, and have role-players at WR and QB. Their problem on defense is it seems like they get so emotional they lose discipline.

Mean while (back at the ranch), I kinda like the guy you have in your sigpic.
