Mike Zimmer on SS Roy Williams: 'I think we can take advantage of all his strengths'

Everybody agrees that SS Roy Williams never fit well in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme. Or Bill Parcells' 3-4 scheme, for that matter.

The Bengals believe that Williams can still be a force in Mike Zimmer's 4-3. Well, at least they believe enough to sign him to a short-term, incentive-laden deal.

"Roy had his best years when we were together in Dallas," Zimmer said in a team-issued release, per Pro Football Talk. "I think we can take advantage of all his strengths in our [4-3] scheme. I don't think the scheme in Dallas fit him quite as well when they switched to a 3-4, but he still went to the Pro Bowl in 2007."

Of course, anybody who watched the Cowboys knows that Williams' performance in 2007 didn't merit a Pro Bowl berth.

Nevertheless, Zimmer thinks he can get Williams back to being a hard-hitting, run-stuffing, fumble-forcing beast.

"Roy is a big hitter, a very tough player who lends a physical presence to a defense, and he makes plays," Zimmer said.

I wish both Roy Williams and Zimmer well.

No animosity.

But this reminds me very much of Adam Archuleta a few years ago.

I hope these results are better.

Has anyone quantified this statement? I seem to recall Campo stating there was no difference and of course, we heard that excuse from Williams himself. I really don't see how the front seven alignment can affect coverage responsibilities that much. I don't know of any system these days that allows someone to simply play the safety in the box and shield him from deep coverage.

Good analogy. I remember Commanders fans thinking Archuleta would make everyone quake in their boots too.

I wish Roy nothing but the best and will be rooting for him to succeed.

But he is done...once he stopped being a big hitter his game disappeared. I think it has to do with a combination of: A.) Injuries B.) Being told to wrap up and C.) Horsecollar rule

Not near as funny as believing Brandon Noble was a "blocker magnet." At least Archuleta had a hot wife.

some folks have suggested that in the 4-3 you have better coverage OLBs so you can protect your SS a bit more. Even if that is the issue, I would expect that if anything, it would mean that the SS is further from the LOS because he can count on the LB to cover TEs or whoever for the first 10 yards or so

He went downhill before injures.

Horsecollar rule didn't cause his demise. His use of that tackling technique was a symptom

I wasn't criticizing him -- I thought actually that we could have an interesting conversation about how the position might differ between defenses.

lol Hostile, you can come up with some pretty good sayings;

i was posting about roy and what zimmer said to a tribute to roy williams since some on the board still liked roy williams, and i feel you should always give a person a 2nd or 3rd change, thats what life is about, chances to turn you life around

i will admit though, was wondering how many flies so to speak would flock to the post like you put it;

I hope Zimmy can motivate him. That's all I'm going to say.

And I hope that AdamJT is going to be happy following the Bengals instead of the Cowboys.

I doubt that. Sometimes it's better to be gracious. He's certainly been more than enjoyable lately.
