MILWAUKEE -- Men wanting to know proper "Man Laws" -- such as whether it's OK to iron jeans or hug their friends -- will no longer be able to take their cue from Miller Brewing Co.'s popular ads. The campaign has been put on hold while it goes back to comparing Miller Lite with competitors' beer in a new spot.

As popular as the ads with Burt Reynolds and former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson have been, they fell victim to the first rule of advertising: They didn't sufficiently boost sales of Miller's flagship product in the still-expanding light beer category to justify extending the campaign.

The series has proved popular with Miller fans and even prompted a Web site, www.manlaws.com, where more than 100,000 proposed Man Laws have been submitted to a Manlawpedia. For those who have forgotten, Man Laws forbid the ironing of jeans and allow hugging of friends with only one hand, not two.

Thses had to be expensive commercials to make with all of the name guys in the room; those guys don't come cheap. I would be that is the reason for ending the campaign. It is unfortunate because I like those adds.

Oh Well, life goes on :)

I had a feeling that commercial campaign wasn't going to last, because I had a conversation the other day with someone about funny commercials -- and while we both thought they were funny (despite Triple H usually being a deal-breaker in almost anything), neither of us could recall off-hand the beer label they were pushing. That's not a good thing in the ad world.

They were trying to "toughen up" Lite beer again but it wasn't working.

There's actually an interesting story behind Lite beer. When Miller first acquired the recipe and put it out, Lite was dismissed as a "diet" beer or a "women's" beer. Sale's were pitiful except for a small mill town in Indiana. It sold like hot cakes there. Miller sent a representative there to find out why. Turns out that the mill workers said they could drink more without that bloated feeling (the origin of "less filling").

Miller decided to use tough guys to get that point out, yet these mill workers didn't have commercial appeal so they approached some active athletes. but it turned out that there was an obscure rule about using athletes to promote alcohol. A smart rep in their advertising department realized that the rule didn't pertain to retired athletes so they went after recently retired guys and that gave us Bubba Smith, Dick Butkus... Less filling/tastes great and I sure hope them horses can swim.

this is kinda why coke zero works better for me than diet coke (other than it just tastes better). but no *man* wants to drink "diet" anything. wanna get a mans attention for healthy soda, call it "coke light" or something. to get really clever, spell it "lite".

I dont think advertising works as well as it has in the past. Besides, why drink Miller when there is GOOD beer out there?

if i drink beer it's usually:
molson golden
michelob light
shiner bock

and if i just want "beer" there's always coors light.

I seldom drink beer anymore so I pay no attention to commercials but Miller Brewing Company is owned by South Africans now and that's where the profits go, they don't stay in the USA. Of course, Heineken's and Grolsch are European companies but everyone knows that; however, not everyone knows Miller was bought out by a South African brewery a few years ago.

In these days when globalization is in glorious vogue, I don't necessarily see this as either good or bad, only informational. Personally, I prefer to do business with American companies wherever reasonably possible so that the profits stay here. At least it's not Chinese.

Ah yes, the good ole days. i grew up in a rural area and back in the day we used to do that a lot and play some mailbox baseball too.

I had this one friend that would hit signs 9 out of 10 times AND from the drivers side, he would throw the bottles out the driver side window and over the car to hit the sign. This was almost 20 years ago when drinking and driving wasnt such a big issue it seemed.

This one time we were riding down a 2 lane road, which was a highway for our area and a car with a bunch of guys came up and were yelling out thw window and tried to run us off the road to start a fight. They threw something at his car and he got so pissed he started yelling for empty bottles, he launching bottles as fast as we could hand them to him, 2 hit the car and a third hit the windshield, they swerved off the road into the shoulder, hit an island of concrete and a yield sign and then the car crashed down into a ditch. I couldnt beleive how accurate he was with the beer bottles, must have been from lots of practice.
