MMQB: The Cowboys shouldn't re-sign Pickens

Judging his entire season off the last two games seems a bit unfair to me. I am still bullish on bringing him back, but as stated before, with the tag.

Cowboys Shouldn’t Extend George Pickens After Another No-Show

The star receiver has gone quiet at the worst time for Dallas, and he shouldn’t be prioritized by a team that already has salary cap issues.

I called this before his recent antics. It was only a matter a time. You don’t really need a crystal ball to see this play out. You can almost bet this as if it has already happened.

I am hoping the Cowboys have learned their lesson and don’t stupidly sign Pickens to a mega deal. I would tag and trade him.

What about the other games before that?

George Pickens Stats after 14 games

1,212 yards (3rd overall in NFL)
81 receptions (8th overall in NFL)
8 touchdowns (7th overall in NFL)

Many of you need to stop being prisoners of the moment. Let go of your recency bias and look at the big picture.
The big picture is that Pickens is an elite talent who has a history of questionable effort, immature behavior, etc.

He’s a real risk to regress once he gets paid. It’s kind of foolish to pretend this isn’t a reality.

That said I am torn on what to do. You can’t just let talent like that go but I am painfully aware this could end poorly and this franchise’s track record with these types isn’t the greatest.

The cap hit is accurate. That’s the rule with the franchise tag. Everyone walking is not necessarily true, but it will take innovative cap management to retain quality talent.
Contact can be adjusted but I'm not interested in Pickens anyway

Stop with this pipe dream. If Jerry tags him EVERYONE walks and lets Dallas eat the direct 30 million dollar cap hit which Dallas can not afford because of the cap.
You mean no one will trade for him? I am confused what you mean by everyone will walk?

Last I saw he was second in the league in receiving yards….he had two bad games…..

What’s funny is if we did what they said they’d call us a laughing stock and say how stupid we are for not signing him.
It's not the bad games itself. It's the attitude and approach. It's why Pitt had no issues getting rid of him. You can't count on him long-term. Once word came down he was most likely going to be franchised, his effort took a nosedive in the middle of a playoff push where Dallas had no room for error.

I'll pass.

Teams have adjusted coverage to take him out of the game the last 2 weeks. I think he's frustrated by that, but Ceedee and Flournoy have benefitted. I would still stick with the plan to tag him and bring him back, especially if you buy into the Cowboys being a few defensive players away from being atleast an average defense. An average d likely has the Cowboys in the playoffs.
Good news is he's still a young guy and has perhaps not yet hit his ceiling!

I know one thing for sure I would have thrown to Pickens 12-15 times over the game instead of darn 6 times!!!:huh::angry:

Pitt got rid of him because they knew he wasn’t gonna re-sign. They tried to get something for him now rather than later.

The word that Dallas was gonna franchise him happened long before now we heard that a month or so ago.

Fact is teams are no longer single covering him he’s getting the attention that Lamb got and people said Lamb fell off…..it wasn’t Lamb.

pickens is starting to look like the guy that the steelers could not wait to get rid of. i hope that if the cowboys do resign him it is to a contract that they can walk away from if pickens starts to act up and quit.
With Dak arse only throwing to him 6 times the whole dag gum game! haha lol :lmao::laugh::banghead:

lol, he’s the most most talented WR this team has had in a long time. Lamb is a stud but as far as pure talent he’s the best I’ve seen in a while.
