CowboysZone 2005 Mock Draft Saturday, April 9, 2005 12 Noon Eastern Time

Welcome and thank you for your participation in the 2005 CowboysZone Mock Draft. The League Commissioners and Mock Administrators for this years proceedings are Cbz40 and Avery. Let's all strive to make this years Mock the best any of us have ever participated in. With this goal in mind we have adopted a few regulations and procedures that we would have all participants adhere too. These regulations were chosen as a combatant for any and all problems in communications, procedures, and in maintaining the integrity of the draft.

Team Selection: The teams were selected by a blind lottery. No one chose his or her team.

Trades:

1 No trading veteran players.
2. Only draft picks may be traded.
3. You may trade future draft picks (i.e. 2006, 2007 draft picks, etc.)
4. Compensatory picks cannot be traded.
5.. A trade will not be official until notification from both parties has been received by the administrators via PM.

We recommend you refer to a pick value chart, which can be found in the Draft Zone, and try to get as near equal value as possible when trading picks.

Draft Day Procedures:

We are shooting for a 4 round Mock.

Time Limits:

Rd. 1 - 3 hours
Rd. 2 - 2 hours
Rds. 3 & 4 - 90 minutes

Time limits will be strictly enforced. We will be asking each team for a list of 3 picks in order of preference. We will be asking for these picks two teams prior to your team's selection time.

Example: You are team 5. When team 3 is on the clock we are going to PM you and ask for a prioritized list. You will respond as follows..

A. Roger Staubach

B. Troy Aikman

C. Emmitt Smith

After three hours if you have not been online to make your selection, we will select your highest preference depending on availability . One of the three players should always be there because only two would have been selected ahead of you. This procedure will keep the draft moving.

If a team does not contact us within the allotted amount of time we will collaborate and make the pick for you.

Posting of Selections:

We want to keep this mock confined to one thread and we would like to keep the thread clean. To that end we are going to sticky it so it stays up top. We ask that you notify us of your picks via PM rather than posting them in the thread. One of the administrators will edit the draft board for all to see.

Questions/concerns? Please feel free to PM myself or Avery and we'll do our best to assist you.

Good luck!

Avery

I have a problem with the rules set forth.

1.) future picks. They really should have no place in a mock like this. if you trade a second this year and a first next year for someones first this year makes no sense. only someone trying to tank there draft would do something like this. Future picks should be taken out of the mix.

Good point! That would mean I could trade my #1 in 2006, 2007, & 2008 for this year's #1 overall. Why would I care? Heck, da Bears will probably fire me after this draft anyways..... ;)

I respectfully disagree.

If this rule did not apply GM's would be stripped of much needed bargaining power and in rare cases a GM could be deprived of any options whatsoever.

Example: Due to the luck of the draw a GM has the misfortune of drawing a team with only one pick in the 3rd or 4th round. This GM will require all the bargaining power he can possibly muster to acquire additional picks.

Whether or not such a trade could be made would require a team with multiple picks in the first 3 rounds (Texans in 03) and also a very talented GM.

In any case the option to trade future draft choices should be available to the GM's.

I agree with CBZ. Future picks should be included as they have a heavy impact in the draft. The Cowboys are proof of that this year.

Please do not trade your next seven first rounders for a pick this year simply so you get to make another pick. We ask that you keep it realistic within the confines of what a GM may actually do.

I have to be honest.
I respectfully disagree with the use of future draft picks as well although I really don't see many, if any, trades ocurring in which this is a factor. (I think most will handle the draft respectively and no one will make rash decisions or sloppy trades just for kicks)
That said, I plan to humbly abide by whatever rules are set forth by the administrators and look forward to a fun drafting experience.
However, if the ability to use future draft picks as bargaining power is upheld, how can anyone know for sure what draft picks their respective team has or does not have in the future? Is there a reference somewhere that states what future draft picks have already been exchanged as a result of previous trades?

[For example, if Seattle (my team) has already traded their 2006 1st round pick in a previous trade, I am unaware of it as most posters here probably are. On the other hand, Seattle may have an extra 1st round pick in 2006 that I am unaware of. Is there any way to confirm what picks each team has currently in place for future drafts?]

Please refer to rule #5 under Trades. Trades will be recorded daily on the draft board by draft administrators.

I think you misunderstood me.
I was referring to trades that may have ocurred in real-life by the actual teams exchanging future draft picks.

Thought I'd weigh in with my thoughts on this:

I did a quick google search to find a comprehensive link with every outstanding trade but can't find anything.

I believe it's the responsibility of each GM to make sure that they have picks to trade. Researching possible trades should be done by each member as you are essentially acting as a competent GM. If you trade away your pick in 2007 but later found out that you didn't have a pick to trade in 2007, I think that would be an indication that you probably shouldn't be a GM anytime soon.

The chances are somewhat slim that people will be trading future picks in bulk. I don't believe this will be a big concern in our mock.

I guess the bottom line is that both parties should review the proposed trades carefully to ensure they are legit and feasible. I don't believe this is too much to ask.

No apology necessary.
When I posted my query, I read it back to myself and wondered if anyone was going to understand just what my question was. I kinda expected a misunderstanding.

Anyhow, Avery addressed it adequately and I agree... I really don't see it being a problem.

Thanks guys.

No problem, it was a minor thing to me anyway. This will be fun..... :skins:

Future picks shopuld be moved as in real life to simply move up a bit.

Trading a 3rd next year to move up 3 spots because a GM says if no one moves up he is taking Mike Williams for instance.

The GMs will evaluate every trade and not allow any trades as dumb as what Mike Lynn or Mike Ditka made. Those guys are NFL exes for a reason.

With this much time between choices you SHOULD smokescreen ALOT. Send out PMs to the other owners and talk up guys you want or dont want.

When grading how GMs do overall the guys with future picks will get credit for that as next year's draft is reportedly a lot stronger. Everyone in Dallas knows how nice it is to have 2 1sts right now and how it sucked to have none those years when that was the case so even if you are fired, you can be dogcussed long after the fact.

All that said, do not deal in future picks if it seems contrary to the goal of the mock for you. In every mock I've seen posters go overboard with trades when allowed so some old school pick em when you got em will help balalnce that alot.

Good point. Dealing in future picks will shortchange your draft in those years. If you're a team that only has maybe one first day pick and there's someone you really want, then maybe you can give something for next year. Some teams that want to move have to give up ammo to do so.

That being said, the first trade that we see dealing their next ten first round picks for #1 overall will be the first trade that we nix as well. We do want to remain someone entrenched in reality.

After giving it some thought I have come to one conclusion.
I may be proven incorrect but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that no trade is going to even incorporate future picks because there won't be many takers.
Accepting a "future pick" would mean losing a pick or moving down in this mock draft and people aren't going to want to give up the limited picks they do have for this mock in exchange for an imaginary "future pick".
Just a thought.

:hammer:

At least the option is there if someone has a soft heart for the poor GM that is stuck with only 1 pick in 4 rounds.
