Cutler doesn't impress me. He's a little slow on his reads, but he does have a strong arm. I just don't think having a strong arm is enough. He has a lot of growing to do as a QB, and they probably should have kept Plummer in longer.dbair1967;1587522 said:Cutler >>>> Smith
oh and your man Lawson, Mr Invisible again

Lawson didn't do much because he played for one quarter. If he were a backup like Carpenter he might get more playing time in preseason.
Lawson looks much more impressive than James. In terms of athleticism they're not even in the same ballpark. That much could be seen in just a quarter's work. Lawson may look lost at times, but this is the 49ers first season in the 3-4, and hence Lawson's first season as a 3-4 OLB. James has no excuse. He simply can't play in space.dbair1967;1587538 said:I used the same keen scouting on them that you did for Bradie James in your other thread
but Cutler's the real deal and Lawson does look like a middle rd pick on the football field

Cutler had a pretty good rookie season, and may be a fine QB eventually, but Smith is clearly further along in his growth process at QB.
That's absurd considering most of their time is spent playing in space.dbair1967;1587549 said:most 3-4 ILB's dont play well in space, its why the majority of those types end up where they do in the 3-4
He certainly did have a better rookie season. That wasn't ever an issue, so I'm not sure why you brought it up.not sure I've seen any evidence of Smith being "further along in the growth process"...he's had one full yr of starting exp, but Cutler displayed just as good, if not better decision making that Smith did last yr as a rookie
We'll see. No sense going on about it right now.losing Norv Turner is going to be a big loss for Smith, I dont know anything about th guy thats taking Turner's place save he was on the staff last yr and worked w/ Norv, but Norv is a Rolls Royce QB developer and this guy is a huge question mark...if I have a choice between who I want coaching a QB, Shanahan or the guy working with Smith in SF, its a no brainer

.
Even on "run downs" when they're plugging holes, they're lining up 5 yards off the ball and running to the left or right without a defender immediately in front of them. That's what I was considering "in space."dbair1967;1587557 said:I guess it depends on what you think of "playing in space"
in most 3-4 defenses they dont keep big run down ILB's on the field in obvious passing situations...on the run downs they plug holes and fill gaps, that is not "playing in space"
now of course in the backwards Bizarro world of Parcells and Zimmer, the above wasnt the case

The problem is that teams can line up and throw to the TE on a seam route on 1st down just as easily as 3rd down.dbair1967;1587563 said:James will be fine doing that...its playing in reverse 15-20 yds downfield that he isnt that good at, and fortunately the new defensive staff here isnt as stubborn (or stupid) as the previous braintrust in that regard

Regardless, my point in that thread was that James looked slow. He was supposed to be trimmed down and faster, but he still looks slow. He played plenty of snaps to realize he still looks slow.

Indeed it is. They tried it for a game or two last year, but for the most part played 4-3. This year they're fully converting to the 3-4.blindzebra;1587596 said:This is not SF's first year in a 3-4.

Didn't the NFL make the Clifton (GB) rule for such hits?
