Because everybody who's ever worked with the guy raves about how smart and aggressive he is. And because the players, to a man, respect him and talk positively about him to the media. And because his offense was very effective last year (2007).

I'm critical of many of the game plans we saw this year--especially WAS1 and the BALT games. The fact that we were 2-6 in game where we were tied or behind at half time doesn't speak well to our adjustments, but I think there were circumstances we don't fully understand that played a role in why we were so limited. Even so, our execution on the field was more to blame for the drop-off than anything the coordinator did in terms of preparations or adjustments.

Basically, it's ok with me if a young coordinator gets out-coached now and then while he's learning the ropes. It becomes a problem when he demonstrates that he can't lean quickly enough from his mistakes.

Aren't we all (sans Hostile) pulling for Garrett to get that job? :)

Technically I don't have a problem keeping Garret if we hire Shanahan as HC, but that seems like a mutually exclusive plan given the circumstances. I think Shanny would be great for Garret as well as Romo. I think Wade is a detriment to him.

So basically, it's just the "yeah, his offense has gradually gotten worse since he's taken over, even to the point where it absolutely stinks now, but I'm willing to let him learn on the job."

Pretty much sums it up. Except the offense got a lot better when he took over. Then it got worse. But it got worse b/c of fumbles and protection breakdowns and b/c it wasn't converting first downs as frequently. Not all of that is on the coordinator.

I think when you hire a first-time coordinator with little previous coaching experience, you probably assume there are going to be growing pains, don't you?

I don't think it got a lot better and I don't think it got much better because of him. Probably had something to do with giving Tony a full offseason with the 1s. That and my guess is as the year went by Sparano's influence waned. And that coincided with the production of the offense dropping.
