Moore: Stephen Jones says Cowboys could add veteran & young QBs, addresses other issues

By David Moore , Staff Writer Contact David Moore on Twitter: @DavidMooreDMN
Stephen Jones refuses to say he's discouraged.
That's a difficult word to digest.
But the Cowboys executive vice president does concede frustration and disappointment. It was painful to watch this season unfold. Even though he went into the final three weeks of the schedule hoping the team would somehow "pull a rabbit out of the hat," he was pragmatic.

Now, this organization must be brutally honest with itself.

Jones reflected on the Cowboys' 4-12 season and what lies ahead. He acknowledges the club must wrestle with whether it's reliant on Tony Romo to the detriment of others and how it will proceed at quarterback in the coming months. He admits, at first glance, that Greg Hardy fell short of expectations on the field and avoids answering a question about the defensive end's professionalism off it, and whether or not he'll return.

Here are some highlights from Jones' appearance on Intentional Grounding on The Ticket (KTCK-AM 1310 and 96.7 FM) earlier this week.

Is Romo-friendly bad?

A player's greatest strength can also be his greatest weakness.
The same applies to a head coach.
Jason Garrett is always on point. He's prepared and so is his team. He believes in hammering away, and his team plays hard.
But does the methodical, disciplined approach of the Cowboys head coach leave enough room to adapt? Did Garrett and his staff adequately adjust to the changing reality of this team? Did he make the right moves after injuries hit, or did this team fail because its offensive players simply weren't skilled enough to succeed regardless of the system?
Discussions on this topic with Garrett, Stephen Jones and owner Jerry Jones are underway.
"Are we flexible, are we able to make adjustments, do we support the quarterbacks we worked with and do we give them the best chance to win?" Stephen Jones asked. "You know Jason, Jerry and myself have talked about that."
The consensus?

........SNIP.......

"I think what we've got to figure out here in the offseason is, God-forbid, if it [injury to Romo] was to happen again and we were to have bad luck two years in a row, how would we line up and have success and have confidence and be unwavering and feel good about the guys we have so that we're not looking for a change every two or three weeks?

You have to start by scrapping Garretts playbook.

I honestly think it's a higher priority than the QB itself because you have seen Weeden go on to have success away from Dallas.

Also, we've seen Cassell have success in the NFL as well.

No QB that isn't absolutely elite is going to have success in a passing scheme that is predictable and doesn't ever help the passing game with design.

That will not happen until he is gone, unfortunately.

The option routes and things that have become Romo-Reliant have to be modified or at least minimized as the core of the scheme.

I'm ok with Moore as the backup so as long as we draft someone fairly high. I want Moore to be to the rookie QB what Crash Davis was to Nuke in Bull Durham.

Pass on Moore.

In a great scheme he might win some games but in this scheme we'd be scraping to win 2 or 3 games for a long stretch.

We need legit NFL QB's and I prefer a guy who can improvise and can make plays with their feet as our backup.

the league has moves on to routes that are designed to get people open. We are still using 1995 playbook. Look how man rub, pick routes and combination routes ran to get a specific player open or "either or" type of route where one of the guys are going to be open. We are still running a vanilla offense full of option routes. And we do a terrible job practing rub routes/ pick routes when we do run them we get called.

It is one win more than he got in Dallas. Conversely, a lot was put into that one win from Cassel. There was a good bit of that during that one glorious week afterglow.

Funny how that works, isn't it?

I'm taking the high road and pointing out the positives from this interview. I love the fact that when asked about a question on adding a veteran backup or drafting a quarterback, Stephen Jones said "both". Not only do I like the fact that they're going both routes and will do everything they can to make sure this blunder doesn't happen again and in the future, but it reminded me of the old Pizza Hut commercial Jerry and Deion did in the '90's. You know, when the team was still good.

Defensively too. Opposing teams kill us with them but we return the favor far too little. Especially in the red zone.

You read to much into that one win.

I watched his throws in that game and almost all (not all, but most of them) of the completions Weeden had were to receivers who had 5-15 yards of space (aka: line-of-sight) of space from the defenders. On the rare times that happened in Dallas, Weeden looked solid then as well. Weeden always seems to play much better against zone defenses for that very reason.

If Stephen still believes this team made the right decision in choosing Weeden to QB the team, he's hopelessly in denial. If there's an appropriate time to admit your mistake, that time is now.

Maybe he is aware of something we don't know and that Jerry Jones has alluded to. He was coached to that design and the gameplan had those routes built in as part of it.

Weeden was very clear that he felt he was not trusted and explains a good deal of his bitterness. Cassel was probably the same way about it.

No more, No Moore...isn't that an Aerosmith song...LOL..

No to Moore, he is not the answer. If they must keep a 3rd QB, I would be fine with him as the 3rd.
Need to draft a QB, even if they bring in a younger vet as #2. Need to draft the future while they can.
Any of the top 5 QB's in the 1st 2 rounds. #6 is Cardale Jones, but prefer not to draft him. I rather wait until 3rd or 4th and take Prescott. If they insist on using 4th round on LB's, then why not a QB this time.

This organization is so reactionary, a proactive stance should have been taken maybe before this season on a young QB. We get a fix for this problem then another one will pop up that's already here (safety, CB help) that wont be addressed again till after the fact, Im as frustrated as Stephen.

Playbook? I thought it was just 1 page.

Get a running back that will consistently run for a 100 yards every week. That is the only way that Romo survived in 2014. If we are going to hang our hat on Romo as the QB for the next 2 years then he needs a lot of help from more play makers on our O and even better O line play than we have been getting. It all starts with a successful running game, then Romo may stay healthy.
