The only way the team can get Carr to take a pay cut this year is if they extend his contract and convert a port of his base salary into a signing bonus. Players don't accept pay cuts in the last year of their deals.

I think he will; his his days of being able to command a decent contract are over.

They will offer 5-6 million. He's a starting CB. The only way they can offer him an even larger cut is to let him test the market first and hope no one offers him starter's pay.

That'd be ok that be 2 mil towards weddle

A CB who has not had a single interception in 2 seasons and whose claim to fame is that he shows up for work is not a #2 CB

I disagree. Lack of Int is also reflection of entire D. I don't even know who is our leader in INT for the past two years? I think it may have been a LB. He's not a bad player just overpaid and people need to get over that. If we can't replace him then what? sign another CB to big contract? which starting CB that we really want will play for 2-3 million per year.....if so they must have an awful agent.

What message does it send to him, and all of his teammates, if we keep bringing back players who under perform?

If I am understanding the situation correctly, currently he would cost us 13.8 million against the cap. We can all agree that is too high. If we cut him, it will save around 6.4 million, but it will still cost us over 7 million against the cap. I think we need to have three corners that we can rely on. I don't want to cut him and have to look for two corners. If I have the numbers right, I think it makes sense to see if he will take a pay cut in the neighborhood of what we would save. We can still use that extra money to sign a mid-level or upper mid-level CB FA. That would give us Scandrick, Carr, and let's say Jenkins. Carr is not a #1 corner, but I think he is a solid #2 or #3. That trio would give us a very solid, veteran CB trio.

He under performed his contract, yet. But the expectation was so high there was no way he would have ever live up to it. It's the FO's fault that we gave him that contract.
Time to just let the past be bygones and face reality. If we can extend him a year and average his contract to $3 ish million per for remainder of his 3 years then we should do that. Going into off season looking for 2 new starting CBs is poor management of our roster and draft. If we can get better front 4 play he will be fine as a second CB.

In their effort to secure a potential shut-down corner, the Cowboys overpaid based on expectation and need. Such is the free agent world; no one should blame Carr for being the beneficiary.

Now, Carr has no leverage so it's take a payout for a reasonable salary -- one appropriate for a solid, reliable, complimentary CB -- or, go away and take your chances in the open market. Unlike D-Ware (when he was cut), Carr has no leg to stand on when it comes to free agent opportunities.

Carr would be dumb not to take a pay cut, imo. He's not going to garner attention on the open market, and he won't be offered much by anyone.

Moore's right here. Carr's a second CB who's getting paid like a first. But we don't want to be replacing two starting CBs in the offseason. That just means overpaying for somebody else--two somebodies--and hoping you get both right.

Either Carr takes his cut (and I believe he will) or we take a bigger risk and try to find an accommodation for Claiborn, which is riskier.

we expect Scandrick back, so in essence we'll replace only one starter. Claiborne was a starter by default

I think Moore is on target here. He is likely to be approached by the FO with an offer to take less or depart. This isn't anything new, since he refused to accept it in the past. If he does so once again, he'll be leaving.
Moore is wrong Dallas never approached Carr for a paycut

Just like last year, everyone is being delusional about magical charity paycuts.

At the very least, he's a reliable #2 corner and would be paid as such on the open market. That means a multi-year deal (three or more) and a signing bonus that is equal to or greater than what everyone seems to think he is going to play his last year here for.

Yeah, but you really need three CBs. I consider that CB3 to be the equivalent of a starter. With Patmon and White gone, too, that's a lot of turnover at that position group. Not that the depth can't be improved fairly readily.

How horrible was the Claiborne pick?

Worst in team history for my money

How does he win? If he says no, and they keep him, he wins. If he says no, and they cut him, he probably will go someone and get a little guaranteed money and a short term contract, he wins.

It's entirely possible that he'd lose in the long run. Other teams won't be volunteering to get generous any longer -- in fact the offerings for the rest of his career might very well be quite humbling.

So is a #1 cornerbacks quality based on how many INT's he gets? Because Jonathan Joseph had 1 interception last season. Malcolm Butler had 2. Richard Sherman had 2....Pat Peterson had 2........now I'm not confusing Carr with any of these guys.....but I just see the consistent trend of how many picks Carr has had in order to determine he's a terrible corner. There's a little bit more to it. Brandon Carr is more of the norm in this league at corner then he is a Jacque Reeves. I think the minute we realize how good or bad corner is in this league the more realistic we'll be about finding one.

Carr either needs to be on another or team or at a pay cut next season. That's clear. But let's also be clear that no matter who you replace him with that person is going to be as good/or bad as Carr was last season.

You sir watch football. Good post.
