More Info On Rolando McClain Suspension, Cowboys Add Linebacker, Could Add DT Help With Tyrone Crawford Ailing

Talent acquisition is a 365-day-a-year proposition, so said Stephen Jones, and the Cowboys are making good on that adage. Today the team made a move to sign James Morris, a linebacker who last played with NFC East rival New York. After playing at Iowa, Morris came into the league as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots. Last year he managed to play in six games for the Giants. With Rolando McClain and Damien Wilson unavailable for practice, the Cowboys needed depth.

We got a little more clarification on McClain's issues today.

McClain is dealing with an addiction to codeine -- an opiate -- through the use of "purple drank," a slang term for a concoction that includes a prescription-strength cough syrup often mixed with Sprite.

McClain's impact on the salary cap remains unchanged until his 10-game suspension is completed, meaning there is no reason for the club to force the issue at this time.

McClain is reportedly in Stage 3 of the drug program, meaning he likely will have to enter treatment before he can return, although it hasn't been confirmed yet that the NFL has asked him to enter treatment. According to sources inside the Cowboys organization, no one is optimistic that McClain will return to the club.

The Cowboys could also be looking at help at defensive tackle. Tyrone Crawford is out with a back injury and if the Cowboys are looking for help, it may mean he's going to be out for a little while. They are also missing third-round draft pick Maliek Collins at that position. Reports are they may also look at adding safeties and offensive linemen.

And for anybody still holding out hope that the Cowboys would make a play for Dwight Freeney, it looks like that ship has sailed. Freeney is reportedly headed to Atlanta to sign a one-year deal with the Falcons.
