what is the general opinion on stoops. i know he has been linked to us in the past.

Bob Stoops at least attempted to make it clear from Day One that he had no interest in the Notre Dame job, even as he was the subject of almost daily rumors regarding the Irish.

Now, he may have a different set of rumors to fend off. From a completely different level of football.

According to both Tulsa World and the Daily Oklahoman, ESPN's Chris Mortensen speculated over the weekend that the Dallas Cowboys may have an interest in Stoops if owner Jerry Jones decides to can Wade Phillips.

Mortensen referenced the Stoops-to-Dallas idea both on the air and on his Twitter account.

"As for Cowboys, if Wade goes, sources say he prefers some in 40's. Maybe a back to the future deal like a Bob Stoops. Not saying Stoops will be Cowboys coach - he has said he's staying put, as has Urban Meyer. But J. Johnson and B Switzer. 3 Super Bowls," Mortensen tweeted.

Mortensen was quick to point out that this looks to be one-sided interest at this point in time.

i personally hope jerry doesnt go the college coach route. there are way to many proven former nfl coaches available, and the fact of all the previous stud college coaches that failed with the exception of jimmy.

this is the same "rumor" that Mort threw out there last week...there's nothing to it

and Stoops would be a terrible NFL coach anyway

Just dumb and stupid. YOu take a college coach, who now has a reputation of not being able to win Big games and ask him to coach Dallas Cowboys? Especially a guy who is sensitive to critisizms?

Even speculation has gotten out of hand. Cowboys won a big game. Have a good chance of making playoffs and even winning NFC East and we are still talking about Changing Coaches now? Why? Only Cowboy fans can do that.

PS: not talking about OP here, just in case.

You are right. I think Stoops would be just as succesfful as Spurrier was in the NFL.

What's funny (unless you're a Sooners fan), is that this type of thing can disrupt recruiting, especially this time of year.

Stud high school player: "I'm still considering OU."

Mack Brown: "Well, that's fine, son, but there are reports the coach may be leaving ... heh heh."

I could care less about the media if he had only proven he can win the big games. He has been a terrible big game coach. He has won less with great talent than any college coach out there right now.

Yeah I was just throwing the cherry on top since everyone else pointed out the obvious.

As I said last week if I was going to go with a college HC I would go with TCU Gary Patterson

The reason why Jimmy was good in the NFL was because he was coaching NFL players in college. His players were successful at the next level as compared to Spurrier's players who were more system guys in college.

Agreed...not sure what the fascination is with Stoops with the ND and Cowboys rumors. Both places would just magnify the criticisms and his sensitivity to it esp considering his track record concerning big games...some good some not so good.

If I had to go with a College coach i'd probably go with Les Miles.

I think he translates the best to the NFL.

I'd be shocked if we offered Stoops the job and I'll be shocked if Stoops takes any NFL job. He's got a heck of a sweet deal in Norman.

He's buddies with Jerry, too.

But, like Doomsday101, I think I would lean toward Gary Patterson if I was looking at the college ranks.
