I wish people would stop talking about Brockers and Wagner. You have no idea how draft would have unfolded if we didn't make he trade.

This for sure.

Claiborne was the consensus top CB in the draft and near-consensus top defensive player in the draft.

When near 100% of the draft world agrees that a player is the best at his position, it is usually a very good indicator.

agree with your point

however, if we was rated the top CB, that does not mean it is worth it to trade up to get him

is Mo a good player? sure

that does not mean it was a good trade for us

i would take brockers (or OL) and wagner over Mo

Yes, you make that trade. Claiborne would be a top 5 pick this year and grades out markedly higher than Dee Milliner.

Dallas could very likely trade Mo Claiborne for Darrelle Revis today if they wanted to.

Brockers is a solid but not special DT, the Wagner kid is a LB that ranks somewhere below both Sean Lee and Bruce Carter. We basically signed a 3rd starting LB for 1m a year. We don't need to use a round 2 pick there.

Claiborne was the right call.

And it has nothing to do with being one player away. We got the top defensive player and our top target of the entire draft for picks valued far less than that.

It has nothing to do with a consensus opinion to draft player X. It only has to do with your own determination of said player's value.

That's why you have scouts and a front office.

To some extent.
If you rate a guy higher than others you don't pay the going rate for that player. You wait and get value.

If Dallas thinks Margus Hunt is the best player in this draft for instance, they have zero reason to draft him before 18 and could actually try to trade down a few slots and get him in the 20s.

They pay the other scouts too. And they subscribe to scouting services to see there opinions as well.

Mo was a bit like Sean Lee or Bruce Carter. He was injured. He needed surgery right at draft time. That scares teams in the top couple picks who need immediate help. So Claiborne was a very real value at pick 6 according to virtually everyone who rated players and Dallas scouts specifically who rated him right after the QBs as the 3rd best player in the class.

Paying what they did for the 3rd best player is insane value. And that is why it was a good trade.
