With the Petrino bombshell, Chris Mortensen was talking about the NFL head coaching candidates on the radio this morning and he was asked about Jason Garrett. He said Garrett will no doubt draw some interest, but he has a hunch that Jerry Jones has "some sort of succession plan" in place for Garrett to eventually take over for Phillips.

Not earth-shattering, but something we've been talking about on here.

Wade Phillips is 12-1, his team has broken all kinds of records, making a real push to get to the Super Bowl, possibly win it and there is already a "succession plan" in place  .

Sounds good, but how long will Garrett wait? I don't think Wade is ready to retire anytime soon. He can probably go on for another 3-4 years.

Will Jason wait that long?

Chris Meyers says that Jerry put a clause in Garrett's contract that guarntees he will not leave the Cowboys, and will become the HC. Meyers went on to say that it is essentially that Garrett and Wade are Co-Head Coaches of the team.

Hard to say. Time is on Jason side he is still a young man and still new to the coaching ranks. No doubt it is Garrett's call to make and maybe if the right job came along he may want to move on. I doubt he just takes any job

I have believed this all along. Jason Garrett will be our 8th Head Coach and will occupy that office for a long, long time.

As happy as I am with Wade Phillips, and I am extremely happy so far, I look forward to that day.

Very interesting, if true.

I wonder if the "clause" guranteed he woudl be Head Coach after Wade Phillips' contract expires or whenever Wade Phillips leaves (which are too different things). Also, I wonder if Wade Phillips knows about this "clause".

This is going to be a very controversial move if Wade Phillips continues to win and the organziation pushes him out the door, only to be replaced by an uproven Coordinator.

I've said it since we hired him...he isnt leaving here...he's gonna be the next HC...its the best situation in the NFL, and Garrett is a smart guy...being a great coach doesnt automatically mean you will win (see Jimmy in Miami, Gibbs in Wash now etc etc)...if you are in a bad situation, you will fail.

Jerry said a couple of weeks ago that he "worked too hard" to get Garrett here to just let him walk away.

True. I think to make the HC job of the Cowboys desirable for the future you better do the coach’s right today. What message would it send to future coaches knowing that you could win and still get the boot in Dallas?

As good as Jason is I don't think hes ready to take over an entire team just yet.

I think even he knows this and at the worst will remain our offensive coordinator for at least another year.

Not that I don't believe you, but when did you hear this? It wouldn't be league policy to put something like that in a contract since he officially is not the head coach.

What do we do for Wade? We just cannot dump him......

Would Mr. Jones offer him a GM job--his right hand man?

I want Garrett also, however, I have a lot of respect for Wade....this is tough!

Jeez, Jones repeatedly stated that he could have handled the Landry situation better. Do you want him to commit hari kiri.

Jones bought the team and wanted a change. Head coaches have no compunctions blanket dismissing assistants when they come on board with a team.

Landry deserved a better rite of passage but come on this occurred almost 2 decades ago.

They probably had an idea of how long he really wanted to be HC when they did this...maybe he coaches two yrs..maybe three tops...or maybe after 30+ yrs of doing this if they win the super bowl he goes out in style

as for the unproven coordinator part, thats kinda out the door now

I agree but I also placed the blame on Bum Bright who was the owner before Jerry bought the team. He knew what was going on and what was going to happen yet said nothing to Landry about this. Had Bright done so it would have given Landry the means to step down as the HC. In Jerry's excitment I agree he did not handle thing very well but I don't think Jerry should have been in that position to start with had Bright did the right thing.

I hope JG remains with the Cowboys, long enough to take over as a HC. But as long as WP is successful, I can't see JJ forcing WP out the door so the question is, how patient is JG, is he willing to wait it out?

Or, is he impatient and want to be a HC very soon at anywhere?

The contract? Well, we've all seen that contracts doesn't mean squat if one party decide not to live up to it.
