Official Lands Verbal Jab on Raiders Exec
July 16, 2007 7:11 PM

Speaking on a panel at a Los Angeles charity event last week, NFL vice president in charge of officiating Mike Pereira talked about how much criticism his office received over a missed pass-interference call last season.

When he said he was tempted to mention the team's six turnovers earlier in the game, Raiders chief executive Amy Trask said, "That's not the point.

After 59 minutes and you are in position to win a game..." Pereira cut her off to say, "And you haven't been in that position a lot the past four years."

OUCH. You know it's bad when officials are calling you out.

Pereira should be canned.

If his comments don't show that there is and has been a systematic bias in officiating against the Raiders, I don't know what would.

thats gotta burn......

officials miss calls. it happens and as much as I would like to say that I haven't cussed an official out, it just wouldn't be true.

most try to get it right and i can usually forgive them but i tell you what.......Jeff Triplett seems to be at the center of every terrible call that sticks out in my mind. Guaranteed, if hes calling a game......something is getting messed up.

Watching Mike Pereira on NFLN during the season is really something. He refuses to say any official missed a call or blew a call. It's always explained as "it's a judgement call" and then offers his support to whatever call was made. I don't have a problem with that last part. But there were some blow and missed calls that his explaination that just made me cringe.

Indeed. I think this guy needs to be canned ASAP. He's an arrogant prick.

You forgot the word VERY in there.

What's sad is I really looked forward to his segment every week. Watching Primetime on Sunday evenings it was clear which calls were controversial. After three or four weeks this guy was like a robot saying the same thing each and every week. After a while it became like Deions Barber Shop segments, time to take out the trash or do someother 10 minute chore around the house.

At least they do can some officials if their on-field performance is really bad. Still, it does make you worry, 'cause that means there were officials worse than Triplett! Or maybe he just has the dirt on someone important.

How many bad calls that determine playoff contenders or playoff games do these guys get each year. I bet it is more than they'd like anyone to know about it.

As many times as Al Davis has sued the NFL and been such a thorn in their side and foot, too, I would be surprised if there weren't a spate of willful bad calls against them. Whatever else the NFL may be, it's not a bunch of choirboys. If you look under the rug and in the closets at NFL HQ, no telling what you would find - just stay away from the basement and the attic.

He is a company man.

His explanation of several calls has been laughable.

Isn't that the truth. It is a worthless segment IMO.

For once I wish he would just say we missed that one, it would give the segment a bit of credibility but I guess they never want to admit error.

That seems to be the problem with officiating in general. They may have some fear that if they admit fallibility, players will start harassing them during a game. If anything, I'd tend to believe the players might have a bit more understanding, since they know themselves that they make mistakes as well.

But it's a human failing to avoid taking responsibility for mistakes. It's just more visible in sports.

I agree with all this. I got a little respect for that guy last year who was on the replay squad during the OU/Oregon game. It was a crap call, but at least he owned up to it and took responsibility.

The NFL offices and owners never make mistakes. The players are the only ones that screw up.
