Moss hauls in some cash
Record-breaking season a big bonus after pay cut
By Karen Guregian
Sunday, December 30, 2007 - EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Randy Moss may have taken a huge pay cut to come and play alongside Tom Brady [stats], but he’s made up a pretty good chunk in bonus money thanks to his all-world performance this season.
Moss, who agreed to reduce his salary this season from $9.75 million to $3 million, cashed in another $2 million in incentives, according to a source familiar with his contract.
That figure represents the maximum the 30-year-old wide receiver, who arrived from Oakland on draft day for a fourth-round draft choice, could have made.
Most recently, he earned a $250,000 bonus for being voted to the Pro Bowl. He also brought home four bonus installments of $350,000 after reaching the 45-, 55-, 75-, and 85-catch plateaus.
When asked this week on his Web site - therealrandymoss.com - about how he’s prospered in New England, Mossessentially chalked it up to being in the right place at the right time.
“It’s a credit to the teams’ success and how hard we work. From an individual standpoint, I tried to put myself in the best shape that I could possibly be in to go in and play a whole season,” Moss wrote. “This year, I haven’t done anything different than any past years. Everything I’ve been doing this year I should have been doing years ago. It was just about being in the right situation.”
With his six catches last night, Moss has 98 receptions on the season. His second touchdown catch gave him 23 for the season, breaking Jerry Rice’s NFL record of 22 set in 1987.
Brown, Jackson out
Along with the five early downgrades (Kyle Brady, Kyle Eckel, Nick Kaczur, Stephen Neal, Willie Andrews), the Patriots [team stats]’ other scratches for last night’s game included wide receivers Troy Brown [stats] and Chad Jackson.
The veteran Brown had made his season debut last week in the home finale against the Miami Dolphins [team stats], appearing on special teams and an occasional offensive series. . . .
Rodney Harrison [stats] this week credited the Pats’ practice habits as one of the reasons for the team’s success.
“We work hard. We’re competing on a consistent basis,” he said, before adding with a smile, “just ask Brady when we always pick him off on Wednesdays and Thursdays. You can say all you want about the numbers, but he’s pretty easy to us.”
Welker grabs mark
Wes Welker became the Pats’ new single season record-holder for catches in a season, overtaking Brown (101).
With his 11 catches for 122 yards last night, which led all receivers, Welker totaled 112 catches on the season. He credited Brown after the game.
“Troy Brown was one of the people who helped get me to where I am,” Welker said. “All those years, he missed, what, a game and a half? I think he should share the record with me.”
