It was early November of 1989 if my memory serves me correct.

Dallas was awful. Seriously. For those of you too young to remember, the Cowboys were truly dreadful. This was a darker time in Cowboy's history than any other. It was following up another dreadful season (1988 3-13), the firing of Tom Landry and an exodus of long-term fans. Not only that, we had traded away our only offensive weapon, Herschel Walker just a few weeks prior to that game. We had yet to see any of the benefits of that historical trade. Oh...and Aikman was sidelined.

There was virtually nothing to hang onto, no one to root for and no hope on the horizon. And here came the Commanders, an improving team with a legitimate shot to make the playoffs. We literally rolled out Steve Walsh (QB) and Paul Palmer (RB) as our starters. Remember Paul Palmer? Of course not. We played in Washington DC and the Commanders were favored by TWO TOUCHDOWNS! That's right....favored by 14 points. No joke.

Now the bad part (yes, there's a worse part for me to this story). I had not missed watching a game in years. We were visiting my wife's aunt and I was excited because they had one of those enormous big-screen projections TV's. I settled in to watch the game...and their cable went out. I was sitting on a farm outside of Dallas with no local stations to watch the game on. SO, I sat in their farm truck and listened to the game on a static-filled AM radio station. The only game we won in 1989 was the one I was forced to miss.

BUT, as divisional games often go, Dallas was able to pull a win out of an otherwise winless season. 13-3 was the final score. Palmer ran for over 100 yards. Our defense manned-up and held the Commanders to 3 points. This loss was a big part of the reason that the Commanders failed to make the playoffs that year.

My most memorable Cowboys-Commanders game was our only win of the 1989 season. A new era was just around the bend, but I couldn't see it yet from the seat of that worn-out farm truck.

What's yours?

Good post.

I remember that game essentially salvaged an otherwise worthless season.

1982 NFC Championship Game. I was young, I barely remember it--I just remember a couple of things: We Want Dallas, Darryl Grant's TD, and Riggins running roughshod.

2006 22-19 game. I was at the game. The Skins were terrible that year (as they were many years under Snyderratto). I am a large, loud, boisterous fan. When Vincent blocked the kick, Taylor returned it, and Novak eeked it inside the right upright--I couldn't hear myself yell.

Think it was 1983. Monday night game. The game Green ran down Dorsett (hated that play), but ole' Danny White/Tony Hill had a great game.

Yeah, that's the one for me too. Came back from a 23 - 3 halftime deficit to win 31-30. I remember being so depressed at halftime, so jubilant after the game.

(Btw, Dorsett had a great game too. 151 yards on 14 carries.)

Edit: It was at the height of the rivalry too, when both teams were among the best in the league. We'd lost to them the year before, and would lose to them later that year too, in the NFCG.

Good question and thread, but there are way too many to have just one that stands out.
Probably the 1979 game when Roger brought the team from behind twice to win 35-34 to win the division.

From Silver Spring, MD... I attended our game in 1991 vs the 11-0 skins who went on to win the SB.. at RFK. Coming of age game... I think Jimmy gave the "punch the gorilla in the mouth" post game speech afterwards. As I remember Troy got hurt, Beurline came in and didn't miss a step. The Irvin skinny post destroyed Darryl Green all day and Emmitt also had a big day. Alvin Harper caught a Hail Mary before the half and had one of his biggest games to that point....

First football game I remember watching in my life and I went black sheep of the family as the rest cheered for their Commanders. No better looking laundry in all of sports.
