It was early November of 1989 if my memory serves me correct.
Dallas was awful. Seriously. For those of you too young to remember, the Cowboys were truly dreadful. This was a darker time in Cowboy's history than any other. It was following up another dreadful season (1988 3-13), the firing of Tom Landry and an exodus of long-term fans. Not only that, we had traded away our only offensive weapon, Herschel Walker just a few weeks prior to that game. We had yet to see any of the benefits of that historical trade. Oh...and Aikman was sidelined.
There was virtually nothing to hang onto, no one to root for and no hope on the horizon. And here came the Commanders, an improving team with a legitimate shot to make the playoffs. We literally rolled out Steve Walsh (QB) and Paul Palmer (RB) as our starters. Remember Paul Palmer? Of course not. We played in Washington DC and the Commanders were favored by TWO TOUCHDOWNS! That's right....favored by 14 points. No joke.
Now the bad part (yes, there's a worse part for me to this story). I had not missed watching a game in years. We were visiting my wife's aunt and I was excited because they had one of those enormous big-screen projections TV's. I settled in to watch the game...and their cable went out. I was sitting on a farm outside of Dallas with no local stations to watch the game on. SO, I sat in their farm truck and listened to the game on a static-filled AM radio station. The only game we won in 1989 was the one I was forced to miss.
BUT, as divisional games often go, Dallas was able to pull a win out of an otherwise winless season. 13-3 was the final score. Palmer ran for over 100 yards. Our defense manned-up and held the Commanders to 3 points. This loss was a big part of the reason that the Commanders failed to make the playoffs that year.
My most memorable Cowboys-Commanders game was our only win of the 1989 season. A new era was just around the bend, but I couldn't see it yet from the seat of that worn-out farm truck.
What's yours?
