Most overrated players

I understand the modern theories of why you don't highly draft or highly pay RB's, but it's just that, a theory. Theory's attempt to explain a specific situation. Using them as an absolute answer on similar but different situations is a mistake.

The reality is you can have success with a committee or a bell cow. However, the RB position affects the offense in a number of ways and plays a large role in the teams success. Treating it as an afterthought is not wise.

Every position is important. You want the best players you can get. Ez E certainly needs to prove 2020 turnovers were a fluke. If he has another bad season then wholesale criticism would be justified. Until then, saying he is overrated is overstating.

Respect your opinion but……there’s always a but.. can you name the last RB that got paid top RB money on his second contract and was worth it.

The National Football League does a terrible job of hiding it. If the league has a favorite division, it is undeniably the NFC East. As the most visible division in the league, the NFC East gets a lot of eyes on it on a weekly basis. One of the unfortunate ripple effects from this is that players within it can sometimes be overrated since they are seen by so many.

For the Cowboys:

Dallas Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott
This choice was not made to incite the running backs actually do matter crowd, it was just an acknowledgment of where we are in our current moment. Zeke is often mentioned among the truly elite running backs in the game right now and the reality is that he simply isn’t there anymore.

There is no doubt that paying a running back what the Cowboys did Elliott is not the wisest of investments and that is a reality that they have to live with. Part of the “overrated-ness” is the attention that big-time contracts bring and there is no lack of attention when it comes to Elliott’s game.

Oh yeah.....Barkley....

New York Giants: Saquon Barkley
In talking about Ezekiel Elliott, we mentioned contracts as part of what goes into making a player overrated, well so does draft stock.

While Saquon Barkley hasn’t exactly had a fair shake of an opportunity to prove himself in the NFL he has hardly justified the New York Giants spending the second overall pick on him in 2018. The pressure is really on him in 2021 to deliver and carry his team to legitimate success, but as a running back even if he puts forth a Herculean effort it might not necessarily be enough.

There is no denying that Barkley is the best running back in the NFC East, but overall he is certainly someone who is hyped up just a little bit too much.

Who are the overrated by? The media?

The only reason the Giants took Barkley that high was just trying to keep up with the Jones" syndrome.
It put a smile on my face when I saw Mara sniffing trail.

Barkley is eligible for an extension now. I hope he goes to Cabo and holds out like Elliott did. I doubt Giants fans would be screaming like idiots ‘pay da man’ and front office would cave like Jerry did.

That injury has to be weighing heavily on Barkley. Does he hold out or not?
One has missed a bunch of games with injury but is a dynamic player when healthy
One had repeated very good seasons before he got paid
Someone will play Barkley and pray he can stay healthy

I would take Barkley over Zeke any day. Especially now. Barkley has run behind garbage lines for years. That said RBs are totally overrated as a whole.

no way, Barkley has a lot of runs for no gains and losses. Zeke rarely gets tackled for a loss.

Barkley has the speed once he gets open for more long gains. But how often does that really happen. Not as much as fans think it does. Give me the consistency of 4 to 6 hard gains. Then a few longer runs here and there. Long runs can be over 10 yards to 20 yards. With a few 20 yards or more.

Certainly 2nd contracts get tricky for a RB and doubtful you are going to get elite production over the full span. However, if you got elite production over the original contract you can easily argue that its partially back pay for services already rendered.

I think Henry, Kamara & McCaffrey all have chance to make the second contract look OK when it's said & done. Some will say Kamara & McCaffrey are as much receivers as RB's but they are designated RB's so they can't be excluded from the conversation.

Good question about the last one. Off top of my head, no body jumps to mind in recent history. Going back a little further I think of people like Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Adrian Peterson, Frank Gore & LeDanian Tomlinson. Think they all had good production over most, if not all, of their second contracts.

Also remember the theory devalues the draft position. Think of how many times a team dramatically improved when they drafted a quality RB. Guarantee you that the 2021 season will see some rookie RB's play large role in their teams improvement.

Again, I understand the thinking, disagree with it becoming a blanket statement of policy.

..thanks to Zeke, Gurley and Bell. They exploited the RB's Pandora Cracker Jack box. NFL on high alert with Cabo effect.

Barkley never had help from the OL. Zeke always had a decent OL. I am not a slobbering Barkley guy. I generally don’t like the position especially when you have to pay big money. At this point 8n their careers I would rather have Barkley. IMO.

umm this post is overrated..please delete it made my head hurt

so overpaid players and RBs are your target..umm no Zeke still is on a very highs rate of offensive snaps and dude came into the league and set it on fore..he will never be overrated IMO. Someone overrated would have been overhyped then flopped..even after a down year and surge by player like Henry Zeke still leads in yards and TDs from 2016-present and again has the most offensive snaps from any skill player on offense outside of QB..he maybe slightly overpaid now but IMO he far from overrated..

im not even playing because IMO you derated yourself picking just those two..this was zeke hate thread..very apparent.

change the name to RBHATERSLAYER would be more fitting...:facepalm:

Easily arguable for "services already rendered?"
Who are trying to kid?

Does McDonald's pay you for hours you are going to work?
Do you get extra pay for making the fries "really good" that one day two months ago?

I need one of those jobs!

That's your opinion and you're welcome to it!
If you read the article you'd realize they aren't picking on just those two.
They are analyzing the NFC East choosing players on offense and defense they feel are overrated/overvalued.

Guess I need a disclaimer on every post: "The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the idiot who posted. He was only foolish enough to believe the article might be of interest to other Cowboy fans. Please don't froth (too much) if the opinion does not meet your criteria. Thanks, the OP"

Zeke didn't have a decent OL last year did he.
