Move Selvie to DT

Also everyone here has dug a grave for Hayden but it doesn't cost anything to bring him to camp next year. If you have injuries he would be OK as the 2nd or 3rd 1 Tech and you might be able to flip him for a conditional 7th at the end of camp if another team has a rash of injuries.

Definite possibility.

But I'm hoping for better options to serve as depth and competition behind Josh Brent and Ken Bishop next off-season.

Nick Hayden is the type of player I'd have on my emergency list during pre-season/regular season and call in the event of an injury if another club doesn't pick him up.

You must not like Selvie too much? He'd get tossed into the water coolers trying to play DT.

Agree. Seems like that's the only way we can be rid of him. They keep watching him playing and bringing him back, so that'll never convince them to let him go.

Yep.

Right now it's like the defense is running a 2-3 defense because 2 of the defensive linemen have been missing for the most part.

Think how good this team would be with two "average" defensive linemen combined with Crawford and Mincey.

Right now Hayden is ranked 80th out of 80 DT's per PFF. And even if someone doesn't like the PFF grading system, you gotta think they aren't far off.

The 40th ranked DT is Seattle's Brandon Mebane. Would he be an upgrade over Hayden? Yeah, I know dumb question.

I don't think he would get manhandled, he is playing good run D against NFL tackles right now, lining up against OG's isn't going to turn him into skinny arms Rob Lowe. Add a few pounds to his frame and he is basically the same size as Crawford, plus he would only be taking 20 snaps or so at the 3 as a backup.

Its not something I'm betting money on, just a scenario to kick around.

I think at LDE they sign a FA and use a high pick at the position and still bring Anthony Spencer back on an incentive based deal.

There are times when the GM needs to force the coaches to move on from players. GMs must be forward think and emotionally detached while coaches inevitably get attached to certain players. The GM should just move on from Nick Hayden to prevent Marinelli from using him again.

I think we need to wait tell next season and have him lose some pounds. The guy is not nearly as quick or effective at this weight. Move him to RDE at his previous weight, let him be a rotational guy. I still think we need a RDE, and DLaw on the left.

The guy should be our 3rd string emergency back up DE, been wanting to draft a DE since before Ware left, one of these days...

I say let Selvie walk, let Hayden walk, let Spencer walk– draft another couple d-lineman and sign a couple free agents.

I'd try to bring them all back if the price was right. I wouldn't guarantee Hayden any money and be very modest with the other two. Selvie at $2m AAV is not a bad thing. If Spencer wants to come back at $3m, I bring him back too.

Selvie is a guy you want beaten out and you try to but he is a great insurance policy. Spencer is finally seeming to rediscover some of his game. I expect a 3-4 team to pay him well though. New Orleans for example.

George Selvie.

Great insurance policy.

George last year wasn't bad.

This year for whatever reason (lack of talent?) his performance hasn't been nearly as good and as underwhelming as Spencer has been, Selvie has been worse.

If Selvie is your 5th DE on the roster, you're probably OK. But if he's anywhere in the top 4 you've got issues.

I don't know what it is, it seems like he lost a lot of quickness by bulking up. I'm sure some of it is scheme also but he has nothing like the edge quickness he showed last year. I saw him as a guy that was a very good backup or OK starter as a rushing DE, instead we got a workman/journeyman run down defender with two sacks in 15 games.

If Spencer was healthy (or as healthy as he looked this week) and Selvie was the same guy as last season this defense would be an entirely different unit.

The problem with that is that it assumes the GM knows more than the coach or the coach has an irrational attachment to the player. Marinelli knows more about DL plan than the rest of the front office put together (and this entire forum put together). After Jones vetoes Marinelli, he could go lecture Stephen Hawking on astrophysics. Both are as likely in my book.

Garrett said this week that moving Crawford to DT was the best move the coaching staff made this year. George Selvie has been a different player this season, solid in stopping the run but not the edge rusher he was last year.

So a question to kick around, why not try Selvie at DT next year after packing on some more weight to his current 270? I definitely see the team upgrading that position rather than keeping him next year, so I don't see the danger of losing his current contribution at DE. If he signs for the same salary as this year (730K) it would only cost about 300K against the cap under the Rule of 51.

Crawford was always a DT/DE type player. he played similarly in college albeit mostly DE. with that said, Crawford is active and he is 285 and probably can get up to 290 and still not lose quickness and be effective. Selvie is average athlete and he is about 270. that's way under sized to play DT for a player that is not that quick to penetrate the gaps and give himself an advantage. he can hold the edge but at DT he would get swallowed.
