I just saw this movie today and wow. This movie shows just how corrupt and how much power the NFL has. To know what the NFL did to the Dr and his boss to shut them up. Actually they won, but it was Dave Duerson's death that brought it back to life because he donated his brain to research. They had already won tho because they had run Dr Omalu from the scene. threatening him and wife to the point his wife had a miscarriage. The real reason why Tagliabue retired and the role Goodell played in discrediting Omalu at a conference. I recommend this movie to any football fan. I can genuinely say i dont look at the NFL the same anymore with this movie alone. Knowing that the players who sued the NFL and got a settlement aslong as they didnt find out or want to find out about what the NFL knows about CTE and for how long they knew about it. Just wow. Ive read stuff over the years but who knew it went this deep that the NFL contracted the FBI to go and tear down Omalu and his boss.

Unfortunately it is a business of powerful men and when those in power have their empire threatened, the first reaction is to silence the one threatening it.

I'm not comparing NFL owners to drug lords but the instinct to protect what they have built is very strong whether it's El Chapo or the commish

It missed it's chance to make an impact.

Whoever chose to open against Star Wars was a moron.

The Playoffs are here now and I didn't hear one peep about the movie and Will Smith did even get a nomination.

Haven't seen it yet but I heard the same. Not sure if I want to see it. I don't doubt their ruthlessness but wonder how much was enhanced for hollywood.

You cant trust no information anymore these days unless you dont know the exact involved interessts in it.
I admit it was also like that in the past but with money involved and the loss of values in the communities it is so much more of a theme todays.

Anyways. I always like to follow the NFL after bad PR news. Its interessting to see how they react to such things. How they handle it PR wise.

There is so much more involved as to think its ones lone personal decission to play a part in this game.

So i do think its not fair (and also very naiv) to make the player responsible exclusivly.

What does that have to do about watching a quality meanful movie? Typically movie tickets are $10 and movies run 7 days a week. Don't blame Star Wars and the playoffs for missing a movie.

I'm in this camp. I don't feel great about thatbut last I checked, we have the freedoms to make choices to what we do for a living. I roughnecked in high school and witnessed 2 deaths and several more life altering injuries. Everyone around us knew what we were in for with no formal training or education. I did it for what was big coin and got out of it as soon as I had enough $$ to get a degree to find something that worked for my lifestyle.
We all have choices to evaluate the risk vs reward.

Without players, there is no NFL. Players want the $$$ millions so they make the choice to play football. It is a choice, not a requirement or obligation. They can quit at any time. I really don't care what the NFL has done because the players always have and always will have the ability to stop playing at any time. Many players earn a normal person's lifetime of salary in 1-3 years of playing football these days. CTE and concussion awareness have been in the news for years now so there are no more "innocent players" in the NFL. If they choose to play, they accept the risks.

It is about maximizing exposure. Why go against Star Wars which did 150m that weekend compared to 10m for Concussion. With only 33m in total box office that means hardly anyone saw it and for a Will Smith film that is a huge letdown.

If it opened on the weekend of Dec 11th then it may have been the #1 movie and would have got a lot more press.

Yeah there's not many people IMO that wouldn't gladly take the chance of getting hurt for the money they make. i mean we all played tackle football with zero equipment and probably would every week for free if we had the time and were physically able. I think the question is did they misinform the players of when it was OK to get back out there or minimize the risk information so they would keep risking their health without all of the information. My guess is even with 100% of the info most would still go out there, but they did not allow them to make an informed decision which is wrong.

That, and the writing was pretty terrible.

This movie isnt about the times in today as there is safety protocalls and whatnot. This movie was made to show what the NFL did to these players who played in the 70's 80's and early 90's. Where they knew what was going on but they hid it from then. Tagliabue in particular. I remember when Tagliabue let it known he was going to resign and it actually came as a shock. This movie shows why, he didnt want his name in this mess, and let Goodell take the fall. Tagliabue hid the facts and Goodell basically took all the backlash. And for good reason because he tried to keep the coverup going.

I agree, i think the NFL gave the movie company alot of compensation to do this lol.

I agree that the NFL needs to be more proactive in accepting responsibility, not fault, for what happened to players in the past. Given the amount of money the NFL earns, I believe the NFL has an obligation to provide medical coverage for all former players who can no longer afford it even if it was due to their poor financial management. I know they do this if players have played in the league for a minimum number of years, but I suspect there are caps on the maximum amount they have to spend per player under current agreements.

That said, despite any cover-up attempts or failure to accept player medical complaints and reports in the past, I do not blame the NFL for the post-career related injuries that players have suffered from because our understanding of head injuries and the impact from even constant yet non-eventful head trauma over the course of several years of playing football has only really matured in recent years.

I actually remember the first time I heard the word "concussion" when I was really young. I was watching a Cowboys game and Roger Staubach got knocked out of it and they later said he suffered a concussion. I kept thinking he was coming back into the game after a little while on the bench. That was the mindset back then given what we knew at that time.

When I was growing up, getting your bell rung was nothing people worried about unless you had lingering symptoms or it kept happening. A coach would just hand you smelling salts and a few minutes later you were ready to get back on the field. Today, concussion and head injury awareness has completely changed football at all levels, and that's a good thing. However, I don't look back at my coaches and blame them for not taking those injuries more serious when I was younger. What we know now and what we knew then is very different.

I agree same here i remember seeing Aikman sitting on the bench just sniffing that smelling salt and it wouldnt even do anything for him in some cases. I remember one time had to have been a monday night game becaue Madden was commenting how he wasnt even reacting to the smelling salt.

I do blame the NFL for trying to hide and then discredit the study of the dr. In the movie it shows the start of his speech he gave to the committee and he says he knows its a violent game and thwere are going to be these cases, but if the effects would have been made public sooner, maybe these families wouldve had time to understand and maybe prevent these players from committing suicide. the players he's talking bout is Duerson and a couple of ex steeler players.
