Dallas Cowboys
Best move: The Cowboys made an crucial move by nabbing huge Cardinals offensive tackle Leonard Davis. Davis signed a seven-year deal and should be a fixture for at least three seasons. The 370-pound behemoth should help out Marion Barber and Julius Jones in the running game.

Worst move: There was nothing Jerry Jones could do about Bill Parcells deciding to retire, but bringing in Wade Phillips is questionable. Phillips is a fine defensive coordinator, but he has failed in Denver and Buffalo as a head coach. He knows how to game plan, but when it comes to game management and commanding locker room respect Phillips is not ideal. It won’t show early in the season, but when crucial games are on tap in November and December the Cowboys will have issues.

It amazes me that the guys in the media think they know all that from Phillips couple of stints in Buffalo and Denver.

They could be correct, of course... but they have no way of knowing if that'll be the case or not.

It's simply a guess and I wish they'd say that instead of acting like it's the gospel.

Oh, and why does the author think Davis will be good for 3 seasons? Davis signed a 7 year deal. Did the author just pull that number outta his arse or does he know something we don't?

I'm not a real big fan of Wade but wasn't Parcells the one who had issues with the team when crucial games were on tap in November and December?

Are you certain this is from MSNBC? Have they no editors? The dig on Phillips isn't fair. His record in Buffalo was very respectable and the consensus is that he does have the admiration and respect of his players.

The writer gets a D-.

Here's an interesting fact on MSNBC's take on the Bolts. How is it that Norv gets a pass for his lack of success in Oakland and Washington?

San Diego Chargers
Best move: The situation was untenable. Even though the Chargers had a 14-2 record and won the AFC West, coach Marty Schottenheimer and general manage A.J. Smith could not get along. Smith made the tough decision to fire Schottenheimer and bring in easygoing Norv Turner, who brings in a ton of offensive creativity. If Turner can command this team with aplomb the Chargers should be alright.

Worst move: Letting Donnie Edwards go to Kansas City could lead to a road of regret by the Chargers because he was aggressive and an effective leader. Veteran wideout Keenan McCardell was slow and not very strong, but he made a career of making big plays and holding on to poor throws.

Especially considering that SD would've hired Wade over Norv (who wouldn't) if Marty had been fired earlier.

I'd really like the writer to explain how Wade was a "failure" in Buffalo or even Denver. Of course, that won't happen, because he's talking out his *****.

ok guys, i heard and read this in reply to the bad rap on phillips.

this came from tony romo's conference:
Asked about whether Wade Phillips.
Said it was a bit disconcerting, because Wade comes in. Known as a player's coach and nobody's showing up to the offseason workouts. The inmates should never run the asylum.

then i read a report way way back, where phillips as head coach had a lunch with his wife, he left an hour early that day and didnt come back the rest of the day, you cant do that as a head coach,

sure, like wade phillips said, family is important, but as Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys, your main family is the Dallas Cowboys, not your wife during season.

Look at all the great head coaches, Vermeil, Landry, Noll, they spent 16 -18 hours the first years with the team, so did Jimmy Johnson, he would sometimes sleep on a sofa, while building the team, to where he got them built as a super team, then he could take some time off, with his coordiators running the team, but he was there most of the time.

you have to have the respect of your team, and the players, its like Nate Newton said in 1993 super bowl run the first year, even nate was a pro bowl player that year, but nate said, he was afraid that Jimmy Johnson would cut him the next day, you have to have discipline, at least some on the team, and have the players either respect you or fear you.

now we all know how players mostly feared parcells, and he was needed to bring back discipline to the team, im just wondering if Wade Philips has enough discipline with the team.

This is true, but I think that it will work out better for the Chargers. Norv is a QB guru and we run his offense of which we led the league in scoring. If Norv can help Rivers improve over last year and add tweaks to get better match-ups, Charger fans will be extremely happy. Wade is perfect for you guys because Jerry wanted his defense to take the next step. He already knew who the OC was going to be.

I think Norv will help Rivers tremendously-- he should maximize his abilities. I'm not sure how good he can be yet. (Haven't seen tons of film on him) But the thing is, with all their talent in SD he doesn't have to be spectacular.

Wade Phillips has a winning record as a head coach, that's the important thing.... Let the games begin, I'm tired of the so called expert writers.

He failed in Denver and Buffalo, yet still managed playoff appearances and winning records?

Did someone expect Superbowl or bust while he was there?

Yeah, cause we never had problems late in the season under Parcells. :bang2: Idiots.

Certainly Wade did not do great at those places- but he certainly did not do badly either. Certainly he has done better then Norv did as a HC. So the SLANT of that writer is clear.
People claim BP wore out the team. Maybe that is true. Then why did his OTHER teams do well late in the season? He had not changed his style or way at all. Yet as recently as the JETS only 9 years ago did great late in the season with VINNY as the QB. So blaming him totally for the late season fall is questionable. To me its clear that a lot of factors are involved.
Oh, by the way- in 2004 we finished the season strong and competitive. Last second losses to Phili and Giants kept us to a losing record. BUt we were IN every game of the last 7 to the very end. Kind of shoots down that theory that it was all BP, doesnt it?
