Much rather pay Hatcher than Spencer

Hatcher rated best defensive player on our team this past week (according to Pro Football Focus). After a very good game against the Giants. He along with Selvie have been playing very well. I am so happy we did not sign Spencer to a long-term deal and hope they will have some money available to re-sign Hatcher.

I'm very pleased w/ Hatcher, but I don't think we can (or should) pay either one of them. I've never beren that impressed w/ Spencer and he has done nothing this year to change my opinion that he is just out for the $$$. Hatcher is 31, and these long-term deals for ageing players is killing us financially. Has Romo looked anything like a 100 million QB so far? Let's face it: He hasn't won anything to merit that kind of money. JUst more of Jerry's dreaming that it you pay elite wages, they will play like elite players. Cart squarely before the horse IMHO...

you know you could sign a guy like hatcher without signing a long term deal. spencer is not coming back, if they were going to sign him they would have this year. so he is gone but i would like to get a 3 yr deal done with hatch at a reasonable price and i think thats possible this off season

I think Hatcher gets his money from Jerry. Spencer is gone. Particularly with the play of Selvie thus far and his injury issues, Spencer has made himself expendable once the season is over.

Hatcher is not too far behind Spencer and Ratliff in terms of age catching up and increased injury problems. I would handle this with caution but I do like him.

I don't know what the cap is like for next year, but Hatcher would probably be a good candidate to be franchised. He's too old to extend, and he probably wouldn't make much more money elsewhere even on a longer term deal.

But he's been pretty damn good in this scheme.

This. You do not pay age, however, especially if he is looking for a big payday.

Hatcher has turned into a player. He is a bit of a late bloomer and has less wear and tear on his body than a guy like Ware who has played pretty much every down he has been healthy enough to play, and some downs he probably wasn't healthy enough to play. I would like to see us retain Hatcher, but nothing long term.

I agree that we shouldnt pay for age. But Hatcher does not have that much tread on his tires having rotated in a 3-4. Playmaking 4-3 DT's do not make it to unrestricted free agency very often. Maybe franchise next year and then a reasonable deal in 2015.

First of all, don't pay anyone until the season is over for once.

I like Hatcher over Spencer, but then again i like Carter over Hatcher. They don't play the same position obviously, but you have to invest in your young guys. Having Lee and Carter will form the backbone of our defense for a long time. Last thing you want is older guys who are wearing down who have massive contracts causing you to lose your young talent.

i can't wait till ratliff and spencer are gone after this year.

these overrated ,lazy, entitled players need to hit the high road...

i can not believe jerry is paying 10 million for that guy...

Selvie looks like the more he is playing the better he is getting.

i also want to see rayford but he has been inactive...anyone know why? injured, not practicing well?

Hatcher is 31 and I still believe we could get at least 2-3 more great years out of him. Doesn't make sense to bring in guys just because they were born later if they won't perform to his level...

Oh i forgot about the word this franchise lives off of these days..."potential"

3 years 15-17 million for Hatcher with 8 million garenteed, I'd extend him now if you could, he makes 2 million a year now that's a big raise. If he test the free agent market someone may pay him more than because of the premium on interior dlinemen in the NFL. I wouldn't pay him more than that but I also don't want to lose him.
He's also 30 years old so 3 years is as many as I would give him and he isn't a candidate for the franchise tag IMO

We don't have cap space to extend him now like that.

What we likely do is tag him next year.
Pay him 1 year big money and then let him walk.

He's an enormous value this year and should provide high level play again next year without ever being a true cap burden.

While Selvie has proven he can be an asset at defensive end, and quite a nice surprise; we can't forget about Crawford. He's the wild card next season.
