Mularkey wants Losman to stay under control

(August 1, 2005) — PITTSFORD — Buffalo Bills coach Mike Mularkey loves J.P. Losman's competitive nature. He just wants his young quarterback to channel his emotions better.
During Sunday's drills at St. John Fisher College, Buffalo's defense came after Losman hard and he became visibly upset with himself on a few occasions, either for failing to complete a pass or after being flushed from the pocket and throwing wildly on the run.
Mularkey spoke with Losman in between plays.
"I think that's just him, and I don't want him to be anything else but himself," Mularkey said. "But he's got to realize all eyes are on him. He's such a competitor, and he's never satisfied. Even though some of these throws are good, they're not good enough for him. I don't mind that but he can't show his frustrations all the time. I think his teammates see that, and it can be a negative for the team."
Losman admitted that it's difficult for him to let bad plays go, though on Sunday he made several spectacular throws, like hitting Eric Moulds in stride on a would-be touchdown bomb.
"It's tough. I've been working on it," he said. "Coach Mularkey is definitely trying to not let me show so much emotion on the field when there's a bad play and to bounce back from it, but I play with so much emotion I get caught up in it sometimes. I've gotten so much better at it since the spring, like 100 times better, but today I kind of did it twice. ... You're human and you're trying to be as perfect as you can."
Tucker, Thomas out: Offensive lineman Ross Tucker (back) and cornerback Kevin Thomas (knee), key reserves, have been placed on the physically unable to perform list.
According to Mularkey, it was a paperwork move and the players can come off the at any moment during camp and still be eligible to play at the start of the regular season. Practicing on a limited basis was right tackle Mike Williams (hamstring). Guard Ben Sobieski (back) also is out.
