I think the over/under on the
Murray contract is about 6.5 million per year ......however you want to slice for the total amount of money he receives prorated over the number of years he actually plays. That is about 1/3 of the rate that a franchise QB receives in a year (20 million per year).

All of this is true, Dooms, but it's not a cut and dry issue. Several factors play into replacing a guy like Emmitt. #22 was effective because the rest of his team was effective (not the least of which was a dominating O-line). Emmitt isn't in the HOF if he spends his entire career with the Arizona Cardinals.

The laundry list of RBs that have strolled through here since Emmitt left haven't had the luxury that Murray experiences now. Dominant O-line, #1 WR in the NFL, savvy veteran QB that's gunning it like a well trained sniper, HOF TE. A lot of stars are aligning for Murray that haven't aligned for any back SINCE Emmitt Smith.

Now, that's not to say that Murray isn't exceptional. I think he is but he has more yardage before contact than many backs in the NFL have from scrimmage period. Some of that is Murray but most of that is blocking. Murray brings a lot to the table and I hope that he's re-signed on a reasonable deal. If he can't be, I don't think that he'll be as hard to replace as Emmitt due to the current factors listed above. That doesn't mean that we can just throw any scrub in there and he'll put up Murray's numbers but I don't think we'll end up chasing unicorns in an effort to continue with an effective running game in the absence of Demarco Murray.

With all that said, let's hope a good deal for both sides can be reached.

True but Emmitt held out after his rookie contract because he expected to be paid. I'm sure Murray would rather stay in Dallas and I think both sides will reach a compromise but you don't do that without negotiating in good faith. You don't throw peanuts at his feet and expect him to thank you. On the other side if Murray is only interested in being paid Peterson type money then Dallas will have to walk from the deal. I don't think that will be the case

All I am saying TwoDeep is that yes, instead of taking TEs in the 2nd round every other year or so it might benefit the club to take advantage of the wealth of quality RBs available in the 2nd round -- recent examples being Jeremy Hill, Bell, Lacy, etc.

Doing so would provide the front-office choices.

Me, I'd be going linemen in the first two rounds, and probably defense the first four rounds, unless an offensive lineman was taken high.

I think there are a few things that may hurt Murray's chance at a jumbo contract for next year.

First, I think the fact that AD and Lynch will most likely be available to teams will push down the amount of money Murray would be able to make after a season like this.

Second, you also have the fact that other than this season he has not been able to remain healthy and some may wonder if he could put up those kind of numbers if the Cowboys did not have the O-line they do now. Murray certainly didn't beast like this the last few seasons. If the team that is looking to pay mega bucks does not have a similar O-line, they should not expect Murray to perform the same way.

Finally, the statistics show that RBs that have a season like this rarely follow up with a similar season. It does happen every now and then but it really is rare to repeat on this level.

Murray is a better back than Lynch. He has better speed and is a more versatile back. Much better out of the backfield. I don't think they are a homogenous product and you can substitute one for the other. Peterson and Murray are more similar than Murray and Lynch. Peterson has a better pedigree and more historical success, but Murray has more tread left on the tires.

The difference between when Emmitt held out and Murray's situation is that back then there WAS NO free agency. One side or the other was going to HAVE to buckle because the Cowboys held Emmitt's exclusive rights. Jerry buckled because we went 0-2 without him. Murray has every option in the league at his feet. I think that if Dallas actually allows Murray to test FA, then hes as good as gone, TBH.

True but most of the time when players hit the market they are gone, If Dallas is going to sign him they will do so if they tell him to check the market may as well say bye. I don't think just anyone steps in and take the job it is not that easy to do what he has done.

Murray is first in the league in Rushing yards... But of the top ten rushers he is 7th in yards per rush.. The following guys are in the top ten.. Justin Forcett. Eddie lacy, Laveon Bell, Alfred Morris and Jeramy Hill...

That's fair enough. I just don't think that we'll have as hard a time replacing him as we did Emmitt. In fact, I don't think we try and replace him as a bell cow at all. It will be a RBC if Murray walks and we'll look for value in the middle rounds with Randle getting first crack at the lead off hitter.

and your avg tends to be higher when you don't run as much, Randle has a higher avg than Murray so what?

I think Garrett wants that Bell cow and has said the importance of that, he played with one and now is coaching one. If Dallas was interested in sharing the load Randle would be getting a lot more carries, Randle is not a bad back

Murray better than lynch is a joke. Lynch makes more guys miss and is just as good out of the backfield. Just as good or better blocking. Lynch has better vision. Murray is a product of the oline. Murray is damn good. But has flaws and is not better than lynch or peterson.

I think based on recent season teams will start looking more to the running game, thankfully Dallas woke up and choose not to be a 1 dimensional team. They say things go in cycles well given the fact defense continue to look for fast pass rusher some teams are figuring out the way to stop that is run the ball and be physical with them.

This .... give the man a good contract and keep the team in tact.

We will have to disagree on that. Beast mode is good at what he does but not nearly as versatile.

It's ironic that the Cowboys gave Brandon Carr a massive contract, but may balk at giving Murray anywhere near Carr money.

I don't think I've ever seen fans try to discredit a player as much as people on this forum have tried to do with Murrary.

Wisely, I think Jerry and FO have figured out that finding a WR to replace Dez is 10x harder than finding a RB to replace Murray. Randal isn't too bad and there are at least 3-4 in this coming draft that I think would be dynamite behind our OL. Additionally, I think Jerry is thinking there's a decent chance we go get AP. We just have many more options at RB than we would with a gaping hole at WR post Dez.
I think I was one of very few on here that was extremely excited with the Murray pick in the draft. He has been everything I thought he would be, simply dynamite for us. However, the hard truth is that good RBs grow on trees while great WRs don't. Its not about discrediting Murray really, its about paying for premium, salary caps, and hedging our bets for the long-term team's best interests. I'm sure everyone would love to see Murray stay for a few more years, just not likely to be feasible. Sadly, he's in a contract year with too many other stars and important players and he's one of the most replaceable pieces.

In this day and age when RB's are barely getting drafted in the 1st round, and most teams use a running back by comittee approach, I believe Murray's contract will set the benchmark for RB's going forward. You cant argue that Murray or any other RB couldve had a better year in a contract season. If the Cowboys decide to reward him for his effort that will be a big WIN for alot of other RB's around the league, should Dallas offer him a minimal type contract and let him walk, RB's will for sure become a dime a dozen. So in my mind the Cowboys decision on Murray is a very important one. I'm very interested to see what happens.

So you say that barely anybody is interessted in drafting RBs in the first round.
And you say most teams dont use a franchise back but go with RB by commitee.

So why should someone pay fist round or franchise back money for a RB. I dont get the conclusion.

I'd say pay Murray max 4mills/anno on a 3 year contract. If he does not want it. Let him walk. We dont need him to be successful on offense.
Go draft a RB in the third or fourth. Be happy with compareable results. And pay him less for the whole contract than Murray wants for one year.

I think Murray has had his run and he will price himself off the team.

Big problem for him.

Becuz he's not going to have 3 Pro Bowl OL in front of him when he leaves..

And Dallas can probably take the RBs they have and make things succeed.

So Murray is in what they call A REAL PICKLE

if you understand the conundrum.

We'll see.

I love DeMarco but with the long conga line of former RBs we have burned thru since Emmitt..

it's hard to believe Murray remains here.

He's not better than lynch. Thats my opinion. And i have loved murray since he was drafted. He's putting up these numbers because of the oline. He can't make guys miss on the second level so he just seeks out contact but leaves yards on the field. A lot of people see it the same way as I do. That's why you see "fans try to discredit a player as much as people on this forum have tried to do with Murrary"
