yes I do, Not only is Dez the Cowboys all time TD leader - which says a lot given we already had the likes of two Hall of Famers in Hayes, Irvin and (maybe future HOF) in Pearson that he surpassed on th record books , but in Dez's prime , he was just a physical freak of nature to have to try to cover and corral.
He could flat out-physical and overpower most CBs, and he could out-sky CBs for the ball in air with his unique eye-hand coordination and body control.
He routinely made the jump ball fade near the goal line look just to effortless and easy. (when he played with Romo) Pearson was never as dominant

Now that I think about it, Terrell Owens should have been on that WR list as well. (unfortunately we cannot re-edit after a short period?) Yeh i know Owens was a selfish, cancerous jerk but he was also
undeniable, flat out dominant with just every NFL team he's been with.... and he's also a Hall of Famer.
Must be recency bias, because that one isn't even close.

TD numbers are indicative of the era they played in and little else.

Before the influence of FF, most fans didn't pay much attention to who scored, as most knew it was a team game w/ contributions from everyone.

Since you've included mercs in Deion and TO and Haley, why didn't Lance Alworth make the list? Did you forget that Frank Clarke and Mike Ditka played for us? And if we're including short termers like Deion, how about Calvin Hill and Duane Thomas?

Anyway, I appreciate your effort!!!!

- yeh, maybe if it were a top 7 or 10 , others like C.Hill or Duane Thomas would've been included... but just can't cramp that many into a top 5 list.
someone is going to have to play second fiddle.
- dunno much about Franke Clark of the oldies, except that he was listed as both flanker and TE, did he produce more as a FL than TE?
- I think Mike Ditka placed his stamp as HOF primarily as a Bear, and may have been on his last legs here in Big D" by end of his career- while we saw the merc-3 of Sanders-Haley-Owens at
one of their strongest, biggest impact days here in Big D".

BTW, since we are mentioning Sanders/Haley.. in just my opinion, I don't consider Deion, Haley Cowboys Ring of Honor candidates .. Hall of Famers absolutely not even debatable.
- But not Ring of Honorees. (and course, definitely Hell no with Owens in ROH)

Tough assignment. Here is my effort, though I did not attempt specialists, returners or head coaches. I tried to take into account 1) contributions to the Cowboys, 2) overall skill and 3) performance during the particular era. Mel Renfro wasn’t a better CB than Deion Sanders, for instance, but I think he contributed more to the Cowboys. Erik Williams was the most dominating OT in Dallas history, but because of his unfortunate injury, he didn’t contribute as much to the Cowboys as otherwise would have been the case. A couple of places I cheated and created ties. Obviously the Cowboys’ younger current players are penalized by the format. I have a couple of eccentric picks included, but what the heck.

Nice job on your list.

I agree with your top 5 QBs. I agree with Nos. 1 and 2 (the right QBs and the right order), although you can make a case for any of the other three being no. 3. A little too early, IMHO, for Dak to make the top 5.

I'd add Herschel Walker to the top 5 RBs, probably removing Murray to do so. At FB, top spot can only be Moose or Walt Garrison. But you nail the top 5, and it goes to show how many quality FBs have worn the star.

Tony Hill also makes my list of top 5; glad to see you include him.

At tackle, I still go with Erik Williams at no. 1. Other than Anthony Munoz, I never saw a better tackle. Your guards are perfect, I think. This goes to show the array of talent that's lined up at guard and tackle for the Cowboys over the years. I doubt many teams can roll out lists this good and this deep. At center, I'd have Stepnoski at 2 or 3, but can't argue too much with your slotting.

Personally, my all-time favorite TE is Billy Joe DuPree. He could block and get open down the seam, and the TE screen from Staubach was always a thing of beauty.

Your DE/DT rankings are pretty much spot on with my thinking. I might put Harvey Martin no. 1, however. Glad you included Andrie at DE - he's vastly overlooked but was a terrific player for many years alongside Bob Lilly. You got the two top DTs right, I think. I love the Manster as much as anyone, and I'd even take him over Joe Greene (a lot of people would say I'm crazy), but I do think Lilly was the greatest DT in NFL history. Again, an embarrassment of riches for the Cowboys along the D-line.

Howley (a HOF talent) was the best OLB Dallas has had while Henderson was the most physically talented. Henderson ran around a 4.4, hit like a truck, and could have been in Canton if not for the drugs. Can't argue with your MLB list at all.

I'd put Cornell Green at no. 2 safety and add Kevin Smith at corner. It's too bad Smith tore his Achilles. You had to love the way he played Jerry Rice.

I love these lists because it showcases the great players Dallas has had over the years.

Cowboys era ...vs Cowboys era ? Interesting. :muttley:

It's hard to compare players in the sixties to players of recent years.

The natural dividing line is the pre and post Jerry era.

The modern era players will get over-represented by most people; although, old timers will tend to over-rate the long ago players.

I started watching Cowboys games in their entirety starting with the Super Bowl of the 1977 season; however, I do NOT really feel that I can give an accurate assessment of many Landry era players, even in the late seventies and early eighties.

I love these lists because it showcases the great players Dallas has had over the years.

The QB order, beyond 1-2, is remarkably difficult because there are similarities in the career strengths and weaknesses of Meredith, Romo and White, especially if you adjust for the eras during which they played. I elevated Dandy Don primarily based on circumstance. Few people would believe, now, how difficult the NFL made it for expansion teams in that era. Very few quality veteran players were made available, and no breaks were given in in the draft. Meredith was beaten senseless early in his (by modern standards short) career but managed to take the Cowboys to two NFL title games and to QB an explosive offense highlighted by the great Bob Hayes. He didn't have weapons like Dorsett or Smith and RB, though Perkins is among the most under-appreciated players in Cowboys history. The best resource to understand the quality of player and leader Meredith was is the old Walt Garrison book, "Once a Cowboy," which remains today the most entertaining sports book I've ever read. Garrison reveres Meredith, and the stories in the book are terrific.

Your ideas are outstanding. I wouldn't make a spirited argument about any of your conclusions. DuPree would have been a superstar in today's game. He played in the golden era of TEs, and he did it all. I agree that Williams is among the 2-3 most talented OTs in history. I really wrestled with the DE order. I slotted Green at CB, but probably should have considered S, since he played both, and would have had him at 2 if such would have been the case. In fact, I probably should have done that because Kevin Smith would have been the 5th CB had I done so. And Smith probably was a more valuable player than Gaechter, who would have been bumped from the S list. But I wanted to include Gaechter because he has been forgotten and because for a brief period of time he was truly a sensational talent.

Howley... my favorite player growing up. Howley is, to my mind, by a wide margin the most egregious omission from the Hall of Fame. I'm not sure what else he could have put on his resume, and one could make an argument that he should have been a 2-time Super Bowl MVP. The HoF is hard to take seriously without Chuck Howley's bust included. I also wanted to include Dave Edwards because of his lengthy career and because I recall how Landry used to rave about his skills as a strong side LB.

Obviously I am a fossil, north of 60. A couple of quick notes. Landry's regard for Lilly was such that he said he would never again see a player of that caliber. Randy White was incredible -- certainly a candidate for any all-time lineup of DTs. But Bob Lilly is somewhere in the conversation about the greatest football players who ever lived. The fact White makes it a tough argument between 1-2 shows what an incredible player he was. Finally, I once heard Landry call Meredith the most talented player he ever coached. He also noted that Meredith had and wanted to have other interests in life besides football. Meredith played for tiny Mt. Vernon High School and held for many, many years the record (I suppose it's probably been broken by now, but I don't know) for points scored in the prestigious Dr Pepper Classic basketball tournament played annually in Dallas. And I have never seen anyone throw a deep pass better than Meredith could. His rainbows to Bob Hayes were nearly always caught in stride.

The joy these great Cowboys players have provided me over the decades is almost immeasurable. It is beyond fun to reach back in time and think of their careers. Thanks for a great reply!

Herschel Walker is either the #1 RB or right behind Emmitt. If Walker played on the 90's team he would have been destroying the league. And if he had played his entire career in the NFL he would have set records.

Spot-on regarding the lists younger fans and old-timers (such as me) will put together. Obviously one tends to revere the teams and stars of his youth. Hey, I'm still a fan of the Beach Boys and the Beatles. There is that.

Beyond that, prior to free agency, good players generally spent most or all of their careers with the same team. There was Lilly, Willie, Jethro and George, which morphed into Lilly, Larry, jethro and George when Cole replaced Townes. The LBs were Jordan, Howley and Edwards. the secondary was a bit more fluid, but Renfro and Green were long-time mainstays. Down the line, so were Harris and Waters. A fan could embrace those players as "Cowboys." How about an OL of Manders, Niland, Nye, Wright and Neely? It was "our" line. Change came slowly.

Players deserve FA, and I'm not being critical. But it changed one's perception of "our" players.
