My dream scenario for Romo

His signing bonus was 25M. If he retires, technically he would owe the Cowboys 1/2 of that because he is 1/2 way through the contract. Jerry won't force him to pay it back, but 12.5M is what he would owe if he retired against the wishes of the team.
what's the Romo scenario that results in the least dead cap money for us in 2017? Release, trade, retire (assuming he quickly un-retires and signs with the team of his choosing if that allowed)? Anyone know?

There's a scenario where he would only count $10 million but I don't remember the specifics. BTB had a great article a few months ago with lots of options listed but I can't find it right now.

5.1 million for him to be traded or retire in 2017 is what we would save, but in 2018 it's 25.2 and 23.7 in 2019.

While it's not a ton of savings next season, you can sign players to small first year contracts with bigger future year contracts if the player is ok with it.

If we release him we save more, 14.1 million next season. It makes it less in 2018 that we save 10.6 because the team has to pay his remaining dead money but the full 23.7 in 2019 would be saved.

I'm not sure about retiring/unretiring what that would do exactly.

Dallas isn't going to beat New York/Green Bay, Seattle/Atlanta, and New England with Dak Prescott checking down to Beasley and Witten all of January.

Romo will probably be called on in one of those games.

We've been moving the chains all season, winning games by having Dak take what the defense is giving him. Playing that way is what got us to 12-2. Chipping away at the defense has helped open up the running game, putting defenses on their heals. Romo will not play in the playoffs unless Dak gets injured.

thank you....not trying to hijack the thread, it is a nice dream. Based on this info, I'm would think releasing him is the best option. Do not see a ton of trade value, would show him the most respect and over the remaining contract years, cap savings are still high.

Hope though it wouldn't turn into a Pennington or Favre situation where he land in our division (ie Commanders) and comes back to haunt us! lol

So we can see vintage Romo once last time?

Super Bowl against the Pats. Romo comes in in the 4th quarter. Cowboys are losing. Romo throws a TD, Cowboys back in the lead. Brady comes in, picks apart our defense, Pats back in the lead with 2 minutes left in the game. All the pressure on Romo. Romo is about to get sacked.. but wait.. he does his vintage Houdini move... and then he throws it into quadruple coverage(cause this is obviously better than methodically dissecting defenses like Dak does), and its PICKED OFF. Pats win, cementing Bradys legacy as the undisputed greatest QB of all time and Romos as the biggest choker the NFL has seen in 15 years.
