Alot of people still talk about the defense as if they are the 32nd defense in the NFL. They arent. IM sure they arent the 9th defense as theyre ranked now. But i wouldnt be suprised to see them end the season in the middle. 15-17.
People forget they were missing Scandrick, Melton, McClain, Selvie for all or most of the game depending on the player. This week Melton will probably get the majority of the snaps at the 3 and McClain will be on the field. I see them taking the same approach they did with Melton.
It just sucks seeing Crawford played DE. The guy has no passrush what so ever. He is not a 4-3 DE. He stops moving his feet and locks up with a OL and just dances with them like he's playing in a 3-4. Me personally if thats what he's going to give you at defensive end, i'd rather see what Michael Sam can do. Atleast we have seen Crawford and know he isnt going to give you any pressure. He's shown that same game in all of the preseason and this past game. He is what he is.
I didnt think i was goiing to enjoy seeing Hyaden on the field. Was a very pleasant suprise. Just seems quicker with a better understanding of what to do in this defense. Think Hayden and McClain are going to form a solid 1tech rotation. Melton showed alot of quickness in the plays he was on the field for. He's going to do some damage in the middle this y for the Cowboys. And Mincey is just a workhorse. Doesnt look or do anything great but just as a motor thats consistent.
McClain and Carter are the best part of this defense after week 1. McClain showed more in that one game then in the whole preseason combined. He's a hitter first and foremost and a violent one at that. The thing that sticks out to me is he hits hard but he does everything within the rules. Always hitting with his shouldpads, and never leading with his helmet. He can drop back in coverage and does it effortlessly. A guy that size shouldnt be able to do that. His skills remind me of Urlacher with a more aggressive hitting mentality. And then Carter working on the strong side just looks like a natural fit. His play around the LOS shows that he is a much better LB playing up on the LOS than dropping into coverage. He aggresssive and love to hit. His speed on them delayed blitzes are something Dallas didnt have in its LBer core last yr. He had that one sack but was arund Kap on a few other plays too on them delayed blitzes. When asked to cover he looked comfortable covering the flats. I think he found his spot.
The question now is WILL. IMO i shouldve been a question reguardless because of Durants play. Hitchens is athletic and has that same hitter mentality the other have. He's young and hungry and i like that. I dont know much about Toomer but he seems to get some mention from people in the know at VR. I dont know if it just from prior comments from Seattle or if he's shown anything while with the Cowboys. I guess we will find out this week.
Mo needs to be more aggressive when put in man. He has said before that that is his preferred coverage but it didnt look like he was good in either this past week. To his defense though i will say most of his fails came against Bouldin. In fact ill say all of his fails came against him. But Bouldin has been doing that to everybody for alot of yrs. Still Mo needs to put up. He proclaimed alot of stuff in camp and came out with the same ole routine. I dont see him getting another contract from Dallas. And i think at some point this yr i can see Patmon taking some snaps from him if he continues this same type of play.
Ive been saying this from the day he was drafted. Wilcox was a bad pick for the Cowboys. They drafted another Barry Church. He's the same type of player with the same skill set. Its not like they have anybody that can replace him on the roster right now so they have to roll with Wilcox.
Now the offense
Romo just needs to be better. Its clear he has lost zip on his passes, and he just needs to be more accurate. He made rookie mistakes this past week. Eyeing his target and leading defenders right to where he was throwing. Missing wide open targets because he was already locked on to a target. All rookie mistakes. This coming yr is a nice draft for QBs hope Dallas goes with one high.
WR core was done no justice this past week by Romo. TW had some balls that were off target by Romo but he shouldve caught them reguardless. We are going to see how much Dez has evolved in his route running and adjustments. Because teams are going to line up to take away his go to routes. This yr is going to tell if he is in Megatrons money bracket, or if he's more of a one trick pony type like a Desean Jackson. Can he adjust and make plays when the play has broken down or if he's just a throw it up in single coverage. SF did a good job on him with backups. But they did it with a designed scheme. Bryant just didnt have an answer. He was cramping or whatever you want to call it. He needs a comeback game too.
Murray is a beast. If this offense can keep from turning the ball over i see Murray getting a whole lot of yards. and alot of TDs if they just allow to run the ball inside the 5. You have the OL that just looks like they can dominate but you have a QB who will not commit to the run. Its not coaching, because they are calling runs but Romo is killing it to passes. Thats needs to be fixed with a simple stance with Romo in run what i call.
The middle of this OL is flat out Awsome. You have a LG who just beats people up a C who is oldschool and just blocks until he hears a whistle and downright nasty, and a RG who is the total package. Able to be physical and athletic enough to pull and get down the field and reach the 3rd level of the defense to get blocks. Then there is the 100 mil man in Smith who had a nice game. Couple mistakes but nothing to cause concern. He did go up against one of the better 3-4DEs in football and held up good. The one sack on Smiths side was all on Romo for changing that play. The whole Ol was run blocking. Then theres the scrappy Free. Martins athleticism compensates for most of Free flaws. But he didnt have a bad game either. Now is Aldon Smith wouldve been playing that mightve been different. Free is going to have an up and down season. But nothing too big.
This offense just needs to stop putting this defense in bad spots with turnovers. They did it all last yr and we saw the toll it took in confidence level in the defense. Its amazing that people are still mentioning Hatcher and Ware losses when this past week we saw more hustle and probably more pressure then we did in any game last yr. and that was with 2 backups(Crawford, Coleman) playing the majority of the game.
