Scattershooting before reading too many posts from others on the game...

-- Hey, a win is a win, especially against a division opponent. Whether the score is 7-6 or 51-50, it goes down as a W. We've all seen the stats on how poor our opening days have gone the last decade or so, so I'll take 1-0 no matter what the score is.

-- Yes, the D was terrible. But guys, it's missing three of our five best players. No one side of the ball on any team in the NFL is going to be the same when it loses so many of its best players. The good news is that a couple of those guys will be back at some point.

-- The Fergy injury is so huge. Just gargantuan. I can't believe that not only are we getting hurt, but the injuries are happening to our best players where our depth is shaky. At NT the depth is non-existent. All props to Ratliff for a game effort, but our run D is going to suffer from here out.

-- Can't believe the failing grades I've seen for Jacques Reeves. He did great for his first real extended effort! I don't think people understand how different this pass defense is now. In the past with two safeties deep, the corners had help. Now with our repeated blitzing, there are fewer people in the secondary to cover. And the Giants repeatedly spread us out with two WRs on their left and Burress on their right, with Reeves of course on Plaxico. Yes, there's a safety deep, but he can't get over in time to help on most passes. That means Reeves was covering a dangerous WR in pretty much single coverage play after play, and he held his own. Do people not realize how hard a job that is? Any corner would look bad in that situation. The large cushion on the TD was a mistake, but that can be fixed. Reeves' technique looked good and he played the ball well. If you want to blame people, blame our rush for not getting better pressure, because that's what this defense is built around.

-- The really worrisome players on pass coverage were Roy and Henry. Is Henry just *that* slow? When he was helplessly chasing Burress, who isn't fast by NFL WR standards, he looked like the gimpy, injured player we saw last year. He was never fast, but my gosh. And I don't know what's happened to Roy. People are saying, "See, I told you he sucked!!!", but the problem with that is that he didn't always play this poorly. I almost wonder if he's lost some enthusiasm of his for the game.

-- Loved the emphasis on Witten. Wade wasn't kidding when he said he'd repeatedly emphasize getting the ball to his best players. And Witten was usually pretty open, which indicates good play design. Garrett just worked the Kiwanuka matchup over and over, and it was a beautiful thing.

-- Demarcus Ware, you disappointed me. Don't make me change my sig.

-- But that said, the Giants were using tons of short drops and quick throws because they knew we were coming after Eli. So it was going to be tough to get to him in most cases. This is a big change for our DBs, and they're going to have to adjust to the ball coming out of the QB's hands quicker.

-- I may puke if I see that Peyton Manning/Sprint commercial many more times. Don't mess with The Shining for a cell phone ad, people. Just don't do it.

-- Bobby Carpenter, are you ever going to contribute? What's the problem? Ayodele and James are nothing special and you still can't get on the field? Ugh. And I even liked you in college and liked the pick. But you need to do something pretty quickly.

-- Props to our O-line for excellent pass blocking. Romo had all day to look around and find open receivers, and we were spared shots of Strahan's goofy mug gloating. Thank Gawd for that.

-- Julius, you looked like total crap. Fortunately, it looks like we aren't afraid of being a pass-first team so we don't have to depend on you too much. But I do think we should run more stretch plays and pitchouts to you instead of trying to go up the gut with you. I think this is an area where Garrett will learn and improve.

-- Again, it was a win! We're a game ahead of the Bears and the Eagles, aren't we? And our offense looked great! I'll take it. It's always a good sign when you don't play your best and you still win.

My problem with the D is that it lacks of a catalytic player who sets the tone and personality for the entire defense. Who is the leader and heart and soul of this unit even when our injured players return?

Hamlin seemed amped last night but he deserved a swift kick in the pants for that personal foul right in front of the referee.

I think "held his own" is pretty generous.

I completely agree, and it makes me sad. People are going to start using his recent dreadful performances late last year and against the Giants as justification for their misguided opinions, which i annoying - but there's no excusing his play recently. He just looks bad. The only saving grace is that I believe he took alot away from Shockey when he manned up, either that or Eli never looked at Shockey.

Julius looked like the same old Julius.

I was disappointed in Roy's play. I am running out of excuses for him. Where is the Roy that played his rookie year? He was everywhere and looked like an eventual DPOY type player. When you take a safety that high; thats the kind of caliber he needs to be.

Ware didn't dominate like I expected him to. I honestly thought that this "unleashing" him on the Giants would single handidly keep our defense 'in tact' while we waited on Newman.

It became evident to me last night that Newman is the player that's going to make this defense work (if it does). I thought maybe we could scheme some things to minimize the secondary's faults. Not so. Newman is our best player on defense. We are going to need him.

Witten was the typical Witten you'd expect; making tough catches, getting open, tough to bring down, etc. Glad to see him get off to a hot start, unlike last year. We may have lost a 1000 yard receiver in Glenn, but Witten may fill that role this year.

DL was disappointing too. Either Ratliff applied pressure; or it was the same ol' same ol' with Canty and Spears. We need to address this too.

Of all the high draft picks we have spent on the defense, we still have a need for a CB, ILB, DE, and NT. Carpenter needs to step up. Him and Burnett could really solve ILB problems.

What misguided opinions? That his play has steadily declined since his rookie year and he isn't living up to expectations?

It baffles me and I hoped it would be better this year. However, after that game, I'm not sure. He did spend a fair amount of time in the box and his supposed strengths, hitting and tackling, looked awful last night. You have arms for a reason....use them to wrap up.

I'm still hearing "Well, he led the team in tackles!"

Luckily for Roy, when Shockey trips over you as he bowls you over, it's still credited as a tackle.

I didn't think Reeves played horribly either. It seemed that most of the completions he gave up they were in zone and he was passing it off to the safety who wasn't there.

CL, I think some people just over estimated our defense and just beleved that Wade was going to fix the warts that we tried to hide last season. This D is what it is and it'll give up big plays. Sooner or later, Phillips is going to realize that BP wasn't completely crazy in his assessment and will have to play more conservative. But I completely agree on Reeves. It could have been much worse but the guy was asked to cover two solid WR's with very little pass rush.

First, thrilled to finally get a W on opening day. Even Madden said that the offense looked to have more energy with MB III in the game. If we don't get T New back we are in trouble if we can't bring more pressure. Henry was not good. Agree with Hamlin. He seemed to be fired up. Agree about Carp. I really liked that pick, but now man. Fergy is a huge loss. I also thought the O LINE played well last night. I wanted to see them pound MBIII in the 4th, but heck Romo was so hot....

As good as the offense is and as poor as the secondary has been, it is starting to look like a complete crime that we didnt try to pick up Bly or Asante this offseason.

This was week-1 people, the defense just played its first regular season game together in the new scheme. At times they looked good and at times they looked out of position.

Ward gashed us on runs up the middle a number of times, Burress got open and made plays several times against a variety of defenders, and the pressure on Eli was sporadic but much of that had to do with the offense they were using where he was getting rid of the ball quickly.

Our offense, on the other hand, played a great game. It is always difficult to run against the Giants but we did a good job of sticking with it and changing up the running plays we called as well as the guys carrying the ball. Garrett did a wonderful job of mixing up the play-calling and keeping the Giants off balance, especially in the 2nd half. I have complained for years now about our predictable offense and lack of halftime adjustments, but not last night.

It will take some time for the defense to gel and play to the level that it should in the new scheme. We did put pressure on Eli, certainly a lot more than they put on Romo as Tony had a lot of time on most passing plays to throw deep. He averaged 14.4 yards per attempt last night which is incredible! And 23 yards per completion!

He wasn't throwing a lot of dinks and dunks like Eli was, he was looking deep because he had the time to. Romo had 7 passes of over 20 yards and 2 that went for 40+. Eli had 4 that went for 20+ and one for 40+. That's still very good but that was out of 28 completions compared with 15 for Romo.

The combination of Jones and Barber works very well. I like the way we are using both guys although I'd like to see more passes thrown to them, particularly Julius.

I'm not sure what people expected, that we would shut down everyone we played and outscore them 45-3, but that's not reality. I expected a 10-point win in this game (27-17 is what I predicted) and am very happy with a win over a tough division rival. We fared much better than the other teams in our division as the Eagles looked bad losing to the Packers and the Commanders squeaked out an OT win over the sorry Dolphins.

We are the best team in the division and will only get better as the season wears on. Our young WRs stepped up and played well, Reeves played fairly well against a very good WR in his first real starting opportunity, Anthony Spencer looked like he was worth a first round pick and showed some promise, and Romo looks like the QB I said he was.

I am excited about the rest of the season and expect us to go deep into the playoffs. I predicted a SB appearance vs the Colts or Pats and honestly that looks very likely after week-1's performances.

Go Cowboys!!! :star:

Some nice obs.

The Julius aka 'Pile Magnet' Jones thing is right on...It's inexplicable really how he gets more carries than Barber, I'll never understand this strategy...Even Tyson Thompson would be an upgrade at this point.

Carpenter was not big in this past game, true...But he did cause some havoc on a couple of plays in particular...In fairness to him (BTW, I found him to be a bust from early on last season), he's been moved around a lot since he was drafted and has never gotten a chance to be plugged in and played...We'll see if he rises to the challenge as he started to progress late last season.

I think all that time on the sidelines for Garrett reinforced just how dangerous having a TE in the mold of Novacek can be for a team...Hence, beaucoup Witten...Nice work, red.

I do disagree on the pressure issue, it wasn't sporadic...It was nonexistent...How is that even possible?...Eli had all day to throw back there and not one blitz looked like it was even going to result in a pressure let alone a sack...Something ain't right there.

You win some, you lose some are my sentiments for the game...We seem to continue to have a high octane offense even without the services of Terry Glenn or much input from Barber (Apart from that terrific TD run in the 1st half)...The defense, however, remains as porous as last season...Can't stop anyone...5.6 yards per carry on the ground, that's pretty god awful...1 QB sack the entire night in this revamped 3-4 that was going to give them so much 'freedom' to apply pressure...There goes that popular misconception (Parcells must've been grinning some during the game)...Throw into the mix the injuries...Newman remains out (How much longer?), Terry Glenn and now the anchor on the DL is gone for the season...Jason Ferguson tore his bicep muscle and we've got a gaping hole in the middle....And with no depth at DT, what now?

The positives: Barber remains as clutch as he was last season, Romo's mobility will win us ball games, Terrell Owens, Crayton, Witten, McBriar (Sad when you have to list your punter as a weapon) and Folk (Hey, the rook played well...Incidentally, the kicker Crosby that was rated higher in the draft made some amazing FGs to help Green Bay win today too).

The negatives: Roy Williams is an impostor as a safety...Not sure what his best role in the defense should be, I think I'd rather see him switch to LB because he's useless in the secondary...Completely useless...Which Roy Williams is better in the NFL?...I think it's a tossup...Pass Rush, none whatsoever...Same team, different season, same results.

Yeah, well guess what?

If Parcells is coaching, I don't think we win that game at all.

Parcells would have gone to the table with a completely conservative, ball-control approach on offense (especially with Glenn out) to keep his weakened defense off the field. And you think we didn't get enough pressure on defense last night with Wade's scheme? Think about Parcells playing without Newman. We'd be seeing a 2-man pass rush most of the night.

Was our defense not as advertized? Certainly.

I'm not so sure that ol' Tuna would have weathered the storm with quite the same results.

Most of our guys looked lifeless out there. That was a stupid penalty, but it's hard to say anything negative about one of the few guys who was playing like it wasn't still preseason.

Perfectly stated.

I am glad we won because I hate to see the reaction if we hung one in the "L" column. The reaction here is that of a bunch of fans of a team that loss.

A few other random thoughts I'd throw in there.

Flozell Adams and the recurring false start problems (Are we ever going to learn the full nature of his purported hearing loss?)...Can't even count the number of times he's hurt the team with his false start issues...Looks like this season won't be much different judging from his play in Week 1.

Andre Gurode...What happened on that botched snap to Romo that he nearly fumbled?...Did they get the snap count wrong or was Gurode simply trying to hurry to avoid the delay of game penalty?...Either way, some of these things are things you'd think would've been sorted in preseason, non?

Tyson Thompson...Apart from the fumble, he looks like he is the man to be handling the kickoff returns.

Was there even one pass play to the sidelines from Garrett?...Looked like the only portion of the field that Dallas passed into was the very middle...Made me wonder if all those plays last season where receivers (Mostly T.O.) would run far out of bounds to chase down some of Romo's throws had anything to do with that against the Giants.

I wonder if we'll end up seeing Stanback handle any punt returns before the season is over.

And does Witten's big game indicate that Fasano won't be used much as a receiving TE?

Good points, Barca. I was thinking about Flo, Thompson, and Fasano myself during the game.

Flo -- I think he's generally better than some give him credit for, but I won't miss him next year. Come on Doug Free, practice and lift your heart out because we'll need you.

Thompson -- that fumble and gift field goal could have been a killer. You just cannot do that, especially in that situation.

And Fasano -- I kept expecting him to get some passes after he looked so much improved in preseason. Maybe we'll work him in more as we go along.
