My Thoughts on Parcells

I have to admit it. Despite all of my disagreement with how Bill Parcells has handled certain things, I've found myself softening toward him lately. Watching his press conferences, watching clips of him with his players during practice, and watching his post game interviews makes me see why players love to play for him. In that context, I like him.

I also feel that he brings a respectability to the role that has been missing since Jimmy Johnson left. For that, I am grateful.

But having said that, don't we have to admit that he really hasn't done a good job here? We are now 4 years into his time with us, and here we are again, a .500 football team.

-What he did with Romo last night should have been done long before. LONG before. The year that he played Vinny Testaverde to the end of a losing season was unforgiveable and short sighted.

-What has been done with the offensive line, over a 4 year period, is unacceptable.

Bill continues to shine where he is strong. He has upgraded our talent on the defensive side of the ball, without question.

But I said a long time ago. You either play to win or you play to rebuild, you cannot play it both ways or you don't arrive at either. And in some ways I think this is what we have done. We have played to win and to rebuild at the same time, and now while we have some young defensive talent, we are unsure at the most critical position on the football team, QB.

Bill looked "defeated" last night. I'm not talking about when it became clear that he literally was defeated, i'm talking about every shot I saw of him.He looked passionless and resigned to a fate that he seemed to know was in store for him and his team well before it became apparent.

Good post, rcaldw.

Although Parcells has some quirks that drive me crazy sometimes, I do like him. And this year I've liked him more than ever, as he seems to be a little happier and less cranky than I've ever seen him. I actually like his "boring" football and emphasis on defense, and I'd have loved nothing more than for him to be a great success here.

But there's no doubt that he hasn't worked here. We need a new coaching staff almost from top to bottom, and I'm sure we'll get one next year.

He looked Drained and defeated in the PC last nite, I'am postive now that this is his last year. Maybe there is some true to these Fisher rumors.

I think Bill needs to take over the play calling, on both sides of the ball. Also the assistant coaches need to come back down to the sidelines

And if we get that new coaching staff from top to bottom, I truly do believe we have the talent to be good. If we get the right coach in here and the right schemes, I truly think we could go deep into the playoffs. I really don't think talent is the problem. I just think that we just aren't prepared as well as we could be.

You are what your record says, I guess. Parcells has built a team that appears talented. Maybe he's taken us as far as he can.

That's what I'm thinking. For example, Buck Showalter was brought to the Rangers and his history prior to that was that he was great at putting together talent to get you right to the edge of something great. The issue was that he could never get you over the top. The next manager always took what he built and made it to the World Series.

Maybe the team just isn't responding as well to the coaching they're getting anymore.

fire parcells!

No way I would fire him. I wouldn't have fired Landry either, and I say that knowing how much I loved the early 90's. Guys like this deserve to go out with dignity. But I hope that if this season continues as it is going that Bill recognizes that his time here would be done.

Yes, the talent appears to be here, but it's not enough. Besides the obvoius holes that need to get better, including the entire OL. I don't think the talent is being used to their potential. Bill needs an offensive coordinator, full time. That is a start, and a OL coach full time, besides splitting responsibility.

Coaching staff pretty much sucks right now. Zimmer still can't call a blitz without giving up big plays.

I think that what's been done with the QB position here in four years is unacceptable, too. Absolutely shameful.

It's time to can the Tuna.

He's too content with his role. The fans kiss his feet too much. He feels he can just show up and still be fine.

It's time for him to be content sitting at home from now on.

The QB and OL positions are it total disarray. We at least tried to upgrade the OL in the draft, we just failed. The QB position on the other hand has been a cluster from the get-go.

We really need to concentrate on getting a QB early in the draft and upgrading the OL. Until that happens, we make no progress.

CL you and I have agreed on this for a long time. It IS absolutely shameful. And for all that talk of "they don't grow on trees", you also don't pick them up off the soon to be retired list, or the, hasn't worked for their last 2 teams list either.

The year of the Testaverde should have been the year that the younger QB's were given some legitimate playing time, and if we thought that "the guy" was in the draft, give what you HAVE TO GIVE to move up and get him.

That is, if you want to be a year in and year out contender.

I have never really like BP and said so on this site. I think it was his assistants that were the real brains behing his successes and he has chosen to not bring good assistants here. Apparently the only good one was Sean Peyton who's getting a lot more from Shanle and Fujita than BP every got.

I've also said that his record was very close to Dave Campo's if you take off a couple of FG won games for BP that give him a bit of an edge.

But the biggest thing is something i saw in the pregame last night. They had clips of his days w/ the Giants, NE, Jets and us. The difference in his emotion, energy and enthusiasm when he was winning w/ the Giants was light years ahead of what he has now. I think his heart trouble is effecting his coaching. He cannot afford to get excited anymore; it might kill him. And unfortunately he appears to have filled this team w/ a bunch of guys that need that "drill-sargent" exuberance to get out theere and do their job. He wants guys that can think and act on their own on the field during the game, but he also seems to want guys that he can bully. I don't know that those guys exist.

Since we've switched to his (very ineffective) 3-4 we now are limiting ourselves as far as relpacement coaches go. Cowher always seems to have good seasons, but he has seldom gotten his team to the top; mostly a "close but no cigar" scenario.

I think it will be a long time (10-20 years) before the Cowboys return to prominence in the NFL...

In all fairness, when he came, management thought Quincy or Hutchless could do the job. Hell, Quincy is the only QB since Aikman to take us to the playoffs.

No one could have predicted he would be cut a month before the season so then Vinny who was only supposed to be the veteran backup, would have to start. Neither Henson nor Romo were ready.

Last year, no one was complaining about Bledsoe the first two months of the season.

Hindsight says we should have signed Delhomo but at the time, he was basically Tony Romo, a player with no pedigree whose only claim to fame was beating us on Christmas Eve 1999.
