1. Tackling – seemed slightly better than in the past few years. Still over-commit a bit too much, but not as bad as the past few years. Good amount of gang tackling going on. The one thing I notice is that this team will actually punish opposing offenses with the tackling from time to time because of the improved size. Couldn’t say that in year’s past.
2. O-Line – Drastically cut down on mental errors. In fact, the same could be said for the entire team. Only 4 penalties for 35 yards, superb for preseason football, especially in the second preseason game since there are still 80 guys on the roster.
They actually had a few good runs on some pull blocks by Allen which is a surprise. Walter was definitely the weak link. Pettiti had a few mistakes, but looked good for the most part. Still cannot get out and block for a screen pass to save our life.
3. Screen Plays – Seem to do better on little dump offs were it’s basically a forward pass or passes out in the flats. Still cannot effectively use the swing pass. Against Arizona it was Bledsoe’s fault, but he was selling and throwing the screen passes well against Seattle and we still looked like crap doing it.
4. Pass Rush – Parcells will probably have to blitz his safeties and LB’s more than he would like to. The front 3 on the D-Line hold up against the run, but can’t sniff the QB. Perhaps this changes with Ferguson and Spears coming back.
5. Blitzes – Did a good job of disguising and timing them. Haven’t been able to do that in the past 10 years.
6. Ware – Yeah, he was terrific. Reminds me more of Jevon Kearse right now than LT. Doesn’t have LT’s brute strength. Caught OT’s off balance with his burst, but didn’t seem to have the strength to advantage of it. I think he’ll probably have about 6 or so sacks this season. That INT was something else.
7. QB’s – You can tell that Bledsoe is conscious about holding onto the ball. However, he doesn’t seem completely comfortable about it yet. He also doesn’t seem completely comfortable with the offense either. My guess is that teams will stack the box and blitz to stop the run and attack Bledsoe. In order to get the running game going, he’s going to have to show he can beat teams that stack up against him. If he does beat teams that do that, this could be a lethal offense.
Romo looked slightly better than Henson. I don’t think Henson’s arm is tired. He seems to be fighting his new mechanics. Still has a lot of zip on the ball, his passes only seem to get wobbly when facing pressure.
The difference between Romo and Henson to me is that Henson seems to compound mistakes. On the interception he threw, he sort of botched the snap, then made an impulse decision to go to Witten when he had A-Train open short, and then made a lousy throw. Romo probably would’ve made one mistake instead of three.
CONCERNS
Safeties – All of them, including Roy, seem to be a split second late in recognition and it hurts them in pass coverage.
Return Game – There’s really no holes for the returners to run.
Morgan – While I like Crayton a lot, we lose speed with him in the lineup. I don’t think it’s a problem. But, if Terry Glenn gets hurt, the WR corp will take a hit once again.
