I became a bit more optimistic after re-watching the broadcast. I hope to get some All-22 views and gifs up this week (time allowing) but here are the initial reactions
Positives
Positives
- The Oline was back! In previous reviews I had commented on how they were always getting driven 1-3 yards back and that was the main issue with the running game. There was usually 1 breakdown per play with Free and Leary the main offenders in that order. La'el Collins looked like a stud vet today in the first rewatch. He had drive and picked up some stunts. The pocket was super clean though they have been good at this most of the year. By the end, the Giants Dline was done. Its one game, but this performance was on par with anything from 2014 IMO at first view
- McFadden was good today and showed some power on a pivotal 3rd and 2 driving 3 defensive players by himself for the most part. Blitz pickup was good and he had burst. The line really helped here, but this was a dominating game from these 2 aspects
- Cassell. Sure 2 picks were pretty bad, but the offense looked like an NFL offense again. This was symbiotic with the Oline and run game success. The Crossing route in stride to Williams, the back shoulder to Butler and the 35 beauty to Witten were perfect. More importantly, his pocket presence was very good. Weeden caused a lot of issues by always retreating when he sensed or saw pressure. Cassell stepped up an out on the few pressure momentsand kept his eyes downfield. The duck to TWill was the worst play for him. TWIll had 5 yards and the ball floated and was thrown late. Cannot have that.
- Hardy, Byron Jones. Hardy really is a beast and his presence really permeated through the dline and got into Elis head. Just like last week in Philly, he began to get happy feet and rush some throws. 13/24 for 170 yards are numbers you would expect leads to victory. He had 1 sack as did J Crawford but the pocket was consistently collapsed and that is a winning formula. His ability to get push from the inside is a real benefit not many (if any) NFL lineman have. Byron Jones is quickly becoming a solid DB. He is playing more safety and TE coverage is superb. He almost had a pick and is only getting better. That Pass breakup on Randle on the deep route was a game saver and great recognition and speed to get there to make a play
- Mo and Corey White played decent as well pretty much negating OBJ/Randle duo.
- Bailey is always money.
- Brandon Carr continues to fight for the top (worst) spot. Their passing game didnt kill us, but if there is a busted coverage or big play, 90% of the time you can assume Carr is a part of it. I would really like to see Patmon and White take some snaps from hm
- Rolando McClain has been very unspectacular. That hands to the face penalty was just lazy and or stupid. 3rd down and negated a stop. He was completely late and had his back turned on the Dwayne Harris 30 yard gain. I really would like to see Damien Wilson get some more snaps.
- The run defense was not good today. Tyrone Crawford has really fallen off. Hopefully he can turn this around because right now the contract was way too rich.
- Special Teams returns and coverage were and continue to be atrocious. Gotta put ST coverage on coaches. Get some starters in there if the effort or assignments are not being executed by current group. No excuse
- TWill had the one bad route on the pick 6 so he gets a mention here, but Beasley is a huge disappointment, allowing the ball to bounce off your head because you are looking at the defender cannot happen in the NFL. He is a bit player that needs the field to be threatened more by other to really thrive. there were a coupleof ther routes he didnt finish also. He offers nothing in the return game and really is too small and weak to handle those duties
- Last but not least is the controversial "coaching" entry. I get players need to execute and all, but there are some continued gaffes that may appear little, but to me, really set up the bad circumstances that put players in a difficult situation to execute.
- Example: 1st and 10 right at the end of the 3rd quarter 20-13 Giants...The play clock was +2 seconds over the game clock. My pet peeve of always running the clock to 0.0001 second should have meant no play. Wrong, they line up for a play and get it off with 2 seconds left before the whistle (4 seconds on play clock). Free gets a False start and now it is 1st and 15 to start the 4th. It is a little thing, but this scenario basically gave you an extra timeout to discuss the next play. Instead we get a penalty on a 1st down run we start the 4th with a 1st down pass that is intercepted.
- In addition, I really wish I had time to watch some other teams route trees. We seem to run way to many curls. Nothing wrong with those routes, but the receiver is stopped and big plays are pretty difficult. This how Beasley is use alot and I just dont think it fits his skillset. There are also many times where a receiver is crossing right into another receiver who is topped. This has too many defenders following the ball and negates the abiilty to create a big play. Also if there is no one better on the roster at returning punts than Beasley, then that evaluation in TC was another mark against the coaches.
