Don't expect much from Rogers, Oglesby
IRVING - Wade Phillips indicated Monday that the two players the Cowboys claimed Sunday won't be much more than special teamers - at least for now.

The Cowboys picked up SMU-ex Justin Rogers, a defensive end turned linebacker, off waivers from New England. The Patriots selected Rogers in the sixth round after he had 19 1/2 sacks for SMU in 43 games, the second most in school history.

As a senior, he recorded 9 1/2 sacks, second most in Conference USA.

"He is a good special teamer," Phillips said. "He did well on special teams for New England. We will work him in."

Same goes for Evan Oglesby, the third-year corner claimed off waivers from Baltimore.

"I think he has value on special teams to start with," Phillips said. "And also I think he could play in the game in certain situations. We just have to work and see where he is."

If Oglesby was the Raven's nickel back and he played in every game in '06, he obviously wasn't too much of a liability for them. That alone gives me more confidence in him than Nate Jones.

Exactly. Hopefully he moves ahead of Parakeet quickly, and I bet he does.

Rogers just sounds like a good special teamer, the way he's halfway crazy. I wish we'd had this guy from the start so we could've seen him play some LB, but I guess we'll get reports on how he's doing as we go along. At least he should be active on gameday if he's going to play ST.

I'm just glad they are considered "good" on ST. From what I've seen our ST coverage stinks.

I think they were mixing and matching with our special teams all through the preseason.

We are going to miss Ryan Fowler, Abe elam and Kenyon Coleman on special teams though.

Hopefully oglesby, rogers and anderson will step right in.

Oglesby was more like the Ravens' fourth cornerback -- or at least he played the fourth-most. They had 969 defensive snaps, and Oglesby played 100 of them. McAlister played 944, Rolle 881, Corey Ivy 277, Oglesby 100, Ronnie Prude 94 and Derrick Martin 11.

Just for comparison, we had 1,011 defensive snaps, and our cornerbacks' playing time was Newman 989 snaps, Henry 980, Glenn 357, Jones 69 and Reeves 21.

So, Oglesby played more on defense last year than Nate Jones and Jacques Reeves combined.

I'm shocked that Reeves was only in there for 21 snaps. The times I did see him, I thought he was much improved last year, and it sure looked like more than 21 snaps.

i think in time oglesby will be the 4th cb, and if reeves struggles at all he will be the 3rd. he played pretty good last year but the ravens have some very good cb's to compete with.

Gotcha. I was just going by his interview, in which he said he was their nickel corner.

Wow... that is good stuff.

So was he filling in at times? or just in for certain plays?

Scheme and players has much more to do with that, I think even we can all agree that the Raven's have a much better defense than we do.

They had 60 sacks last year to our 34, so it's much easier to hide a 4th corner when there is consistent pressure on the quarterbacks. I wouldn't be so quick to give this guy props for playing in one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Say Newman is out and Reeves starts. Jones comes in to play the nickle. Who comes in when the Gints go 4 wide? Oglesby? Do we have a safety do it? Seems like we will be at a disadvantage big time.

I'm pretty sure Ivy was injured at some point last year and thats when Oglesby played the 3rd corner.

Ivy missed three games (Weeks 6, 8 and 9), so that probably was part of it. According to the Ravens' Web site, Oglesby played on the defense in six games last season. In the other 10, he played only on special teams.

In Week 2 against Oakland, Oglesby actually filled in as the first-team cornerback when Samari Rolle was injured early in the game. Oglesby was in by the middle of the second quarter and played the rest of the game. Here's a snippet about that game --

http://www.profootball24x7.com/column_view.php?cid=26&id=526&view=archive

The Ravens have granted a lot of young athletes extended playing time on defense, and the gamble has been paying off so far. Rookie safety Dawan Landry led Baltimore with eight tackles Sunday. Evan Oglesby filled in capably at cornerback when Samari Rolle was hurt. And rookie nickel back Ronnie Prude intercepted a pass and downed a Sam Koch punt near the Raiders goal line with an over-the-shoulder catch.

"Dawan Landry continues to play as though he has been in the league for a while," Billick said. "Evan Oglesby, against a very talented receiving group, to step up the way he did, is very encouraging."

The point was that he filled in on the first team, not how well he played.

Do you think they would have used Corey Ivy or Ronnie Prude if it was a different opponent?
