Players predict split training camp
By Tom Orsborn on Feb 28, 10 06:47 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) Save & Share

Tashard Choice and Sam Hurd said they are confident the Cowboys will split training camp this summer between San Antonio and Oxnard, Calif.

The Cowboys are contractually bound to train in San Antonio through 2011, but they are considering spending a portion of this year's camp on the West Coast, something San Antonio city officials say is fine with them.

"It's the best of both worlds," Hurd said.

Choice suggested he prefers practicing outdoors in Oxnard on grass.

"Training camp is cool here because of the fans, but practicing on that turf (at the Alamodome) hurts," Choice said. "We'd rather be on grass."

Hurd recovering from surgery

Cowboys wide receiver/special teams ace Sam Hurd underwent surgery last month on his right thumb to repair a torn ligament and remove a bone chip.

Sporting a soft cast at a promotional appearance in San Antonio, the Brackenridge graduate said he should be back to 100 percent in less than a month.

The Cowboys must decide by Thursday whether to put a tender on Hurd, a restricted free agent.

"I love playing for Dallas," Hurd said. "I wouldn't want to leave. But it's a business and it's up to them."

I think Jerry like Sam.

I like him too. I hope hurd sticks around. Unless it means we have a dynamic kick returner taking his roster spot. Then I will like him on another team.

His special teams contribution may keep him on the roster.

With how our special teams are shaping up now, I think that is no longer enough to stay on the team.

Gawd, a split camp is so stupid. Please, Jerry, don't go back to putting promoting the team above getting it ready to play.

He was one of the leading tacklers. You dont just dispose of those guys. I think Dallas brings him to camp but with all the rookies and players from last years draft hungry for a spot he may have hard time making it if we can find a more productive player in other area's that can fill his role on coverage.

Not to be a wise acre, but every camp is split already. We do half of pre-season in Camp and half at VR. The only difference really here is a shorter travel to one of the Pre season games. I don't get the problem.

Players are usually creatures of habbit so I doubt they like picking up and moving during camp.

Have it at 1 place and keep it there.

With the early game this season, after those start it's not much a problem traveling about. Stability during the week is the thing, and whether in California or Valley Ranch at that point, is kind of mute. Much of the roster is already familiar to California, and the team already practices about the area of Dallas which improves response in different environments. It could be a good element to training as well.

it would not be stupid if we used the time in oxnard to scrimmage the raiders.

Normally the cowboys have a pre-season game on the west coast anyways so
i don't see where a split camp would hurt anything

I'd prefer San Antonio. We seem to have better seasons when we have training camp there rather than Oxnard. Maybe that turf actually toughens them up or something.

As a WC Cowboy fan, I'm all for splitting camp. How else I'm going to raise my boys to be Cowboy fans in the heart of Niner territory if I can't bring them to preseason at the Ox?
