It really is a non-issue. The fact that it can be moved makes it no big deal. Now if it was immovable, I could see the outcry, but what it boils down to is a bunch of jealous owners and league officials finding something to make themselves feel better because they wish this beautiful palace was theirs. OK, haters, the videoboard is too low. What else you got? What's that, nothing? That's what I thought.

:laugh2:

Me likey this post. :D

JJT was just on ESPN2.

Said it was funny at first and turned into something comical. Said he believes Jerry is going to raise it, but ask the league to pay for it.

Whatever consternation he feels about the board needing to be moved is overridden by his love of the attention for the stadium and the controversy. Vastly.
The great thing about this from a marketing standpoint is those casual fans who had not heard of the video board before the stadium opened have now. Not that I'm all about the marketing, but I know for sure JJ likes it to a degree.

Maybe it is just me, but I don't find it embarrassing to have a do over punt. I find it comical, but hardly embarrassing. I know why some in the media want to claim it is embarrassing. They don't like Jerry Jones. It just is not that big of an issue to me especially since it can be "fixed".

Completely agree.

They act like fans from across the league will be shunned at the mere sight of a punted ball hitting the jumbotron.

I can understand the league keeping an eye out for it because if say we had 5 do-overs in a row then that would look bad. Perhaps if the critics would investigate what type of kick is needed to hit the board it would do something crazy like provide an answer.

The only guy to worry about with this is Scifres who can actually kick it 45 yards and get 5.0-5.5 second hang time which is ridiculous and I really don't believe there's been a punter like him in this league. Lechler has a big leg, but he's never been known for great hangtime and he's more along the lines of McBriar and booms them deep.

In my opinion it is more embarrassing when a new stadium is built and a few seats have obstructive views. Does the new stadium have that issue? I know some of the other new stadiums have to deal with that with Indy's new stadium being one of them.

It does have a handful of obstructed views, but who knows if they are even selling tix for those seat.

I think what's real embarrasing in the league and no critics ever mention it and it makes an impact in games AND can cause injuries is the stadiums that serve as a baseball stadium as well and the dirt infield is in play. It looks like crap and plays like crap, but that's okay in the eyes of Cowboys critics.

The likely won't have to raise it much - those punts are near apogee when they hit, so 5 or 6 feet will likely reduce hits by 90%.

Dual use stadiums are simply a vestigal item since cities only had one stadium for the longest time. They are becoming fewer and further between.

While the competition committed ponders this, maybe they can also consider the ball hitting the wires strung for the remote overhead camera. Several years ago during a San Diego punt the ball hit the wire and then hit a bears player. San Diego recovers the ball and ends up winning the game. No call made, no do over, no embarrassment, no outcry.

I agree 100%

Plus it gives the media another opportunity to show off their ignorance.

Here's a thought: tell your punter not to hit the freaking board. If our guy can do it, so should your's...

Anyone with a basic understanding of the equations of motion could calculate that it only takes a punt with 4.75s hangtime to rise 90 feet. While that's a pretty good hangtime, I'd guess that a significant percentage of punts meet or exceed that hangtime.

Also, as seen in the game, a poorly struck punt may rise exceedingly high and easily hit the scoreboard.

Raising the scoreboard 20 feet would change the hangtime required to 5.25s, which would still pose the possibility of hitting the scoreboard, though it probably wouldn't be worth worrying about at that point.

Actually, most punts in the NFL are in the 4.3-4.7 hangtime range (I am actually nerdy enough to clock hangtime of punts in the NFL). Scifres is really the only guy that can punt one without trying to down it inside the 10 and get 5.0+ seconds of hangtime and still knock it about 45 yards...that's why he gets a ton of fair catches, is a nuisance for punt returners and is the best punter I have personally seen without question. McBriar's good punts usually get right around 4.7 seconds of hangtime.

Seems odd that reporters like JJT still haven't heard that there's relatively no cost to raising it or lowering it, since they've already spent the money on installing the system to raise it lower it between events.

I've heard that too, but what's all the $2 million talk? Was that just Mort talking crap?

Kristi Scales spoke directly with the stadium general manager. I'll take his word over an ESPN correspondent.

I doubt actually calling and talking to management at the stadium ever even crossed Mortenson's mind.

it was built to nfl standards...the nfl is gonna have a hell of a time with a lot of other stadiums if they make jerry move it IMO.

In my honest opinion,, the rookie Titan punter hit the thing intentionally,, either because he wanted to or was told to..... This is the same rookie punter that scored a TD on a fake punt on the first series of the Titans first preseason game this year.

I wouldn't put it past Fisher telling him to hit it or the rookie just wanting to make a name for himself.

Normal punts during a game are not gonna come close,,, McBriar didn't hit it and he is certainly capable....

Make it a delay of game penalty and nobody will hit it.

Jeff Fisher is an arrogant piece of crap so I don't doubt it.

How are you going to make it a delay of game penalty? To suit one stadium?
