Phillips says no to Pacman

Returning punts isn't enough for Pacman Jones. He also wants to return kickoffs for the Cowboys.

But Wade Phillips has turned a deaf ear to Pacman's request. And the logic behind his decision is sound.

"I think it's size," Phillips told reporters in Irving on Tuesday. "On kickoff returns, you usually need a bigger guy who can run through tackles because those guys (on the kickoff team) are coming down a little bit different than they are on punts."

Jones is listed at 5 foot 10, 187 pounds but is really smaller. The player who handled the chore last season, Miles Austin, is 6-3, 215 pounds. With Austin sidelined for the next four to six weeks, Phillips is auditioning the following candidates: 6-3, 215-pound Isaiah Stanback and 5-11, 187-pound Orlando Scandrick.

There was a kid on my HS team who was the best offensive and defensive player and was a freak on both punt and kick returns, I think he played every snap every game, it beat the **** out of him.

Im fine w/ Stanback and Scandrick/Austin

Should get us to the 30-35 most of the time

Thanks for sharing....

We have some people who are better than average kick-off returners but no one we want to chance on punts.

I can't figure out why anyone would want a big play threat on the field during kick returns.

What Phillips said today...

"I think it's size," Phillips told reporters in Irving on Tuesday. "On kickoff returns, you usually need a bigger guy who can run through tackles because those guys (on the kickoff team) are coming down a little bit different than they are on punts."

What I said yesterday...

It's one thing to be afraid of injuries, but you need to be sensible about it. Kickoff coverage teams have a lot of time to set up and get in their lanes, so I think straight-line speed is more important than anything, you need to get up to the 20 as fast as possible, possibly make one cut and then go. Punt returning allows for more wiggle room, because of the way the coverage sets up, a little more random and spaced out than kickoff coverage. Plus, kickoff coverage units are coming at a really high rate of speed.

Man, I'm good. Let's dance! :dance2: :laugh2:

Well at least Wade did not say punts. Myself I would have Jones do both, the guy is one of the best in the business in the return game and it can make a world of difference especially when playing teams that are evenly matched offensively and defensively

Why risk poor field position?

I suppose this way Tony and company get to rack up more yards on the way down field.

Seriously though, size? Come on.

Its not like Hester, Sproles, Ginn, Yamon Figurs, Dante Hall, Hobbs are monsters.

All pretty much in that same size area and all doing pretty well.

I guess Adam being the #4/#3 CB is just too important to risk.

and it's not like scandrick is some sort of hulk compared to jones. they're pretty much the same size.

The depth chart for KR should be Miles, Felix, Jenkins, Scandrick

I disagree Felix should be ahead of Austin matter fact I don't want to see Austin returning kicks no more than put Pacman back there. The more chances our big play guys get to touch the ball the more opportunities for big plays.

Austin and Felix would be back there together is what I was inferring. Also, Austin IMO is a big play guy once he has the ball in his hands.

I don't get it either.

If Pac is our nickel corner, then why not let him take both PR and KR.

If Wade doesn't think it'll work, well why not at least TRY it in the preseason.

That would be my argument for him returning ko's. If he was playing every down on D i could see him not. As far as Felix, i dont know, i would hate to seem him get blown up from his blindside and hurt. I think he's going to be too valuable on offense.

but using wade's logic why was patrick crayton back there all last year returning punts? wasn't he too valuable? he was actually starting, and here is wade trying to protect a 3rd corner and a backup rb, who excels at returning kicks. the whole reason we drafted tashard was for depth, and wade is afraid to use it.

felix is a game changer at kr, it's ******** not to take advantage of that.
