Camp Marshmellow
LOS ANGELES - Wade Phillips knows it's coming. That's why he beat his critics to the punch yesterday and tagged this year's training camp "Camp Marshmellow."
Last year's camp, which was held in San Antonio, was dubbed "Camp Cupcake" by Phillips bashers who were uneasy with the lack of contact inside the Alamodome. Of course, nobody said anything about that as the Cowboys raced out of the gate to an 11-1 record.
Given the fact that there will be little contact in Oxnard, where temperatures will be in the low 70s much of the time, Phillips knows he'll hear from his critics again.
"It's Marshmallow this year," he told reporters in Irving yesterday. "We'll have a strong training camp, but we'll curb back on pads at some time...Will it be any different? I don't know. I think the players are really looking forward to this year, as am I.
"I think we've established ourselves, at least on paper, as a contender. It's nice to be there rather than the other situation.
"We all know how hard it is to get to the Super Bowl, but those have to be the goals for this team."
I've been in L.A. for the last week, and so far, the weather has been perfect. The Cowboys can expect the same in Oxnard, which is about 60 miles north of L.A. along the coast.
"The weather is an important part of it because you get more work and you can work longer and get more focus if it's cooler," Wade Phillips said.
During breaks at camp, I'll try to spend as much time as I can at the beach in Ventura. Mrs. O and I spent yesterday at Manhattan Beach, which has become the preferred place to live in L.A. if you are a Laker, Dodger or King. It's a 10-minute ride to LAX and another short hop to the Lakers and Dodgers training center in El Segundo.
Bottom line, though: With the weather so nice, it's hard not to have a good time outdoors in L.A.
