I have seen a couple posts maybe similar, but not sure if they are the same as this one, if so - oh well...

In your opinion, who are the top 5 most important players to this team and their success. This is not necessarily your 5 favorite players, just 5 most important players to the success of this season and you can take everything such as backups, etc... into account.

in order, mine are:

1. Tony Romo
I debated between Ware and Romo here at the no. 1 spot, but decided on Romo because the qb spot is so important to our entire offense and without Romo, forget it.

2. Demarcus Ware
* see above on why #2, our defense relies on a good pass rush, Ware by himself requires Off. Coordinators to account for him with double teams and/or RB blocking help.

3. Jason Witten
This guy is easily the best in the league for me, and plays that important piece of a good offense that wants to keep the chain moving. He is our Novacek, and any TE who get 65+ receptions a year must be important.

4. Felix Jones
Some may question why I did not place MBIII here or even in the list, but I feel Choice and Felix "could" replace what he brings and that is not slighting MBIII at all, just that I feel Felix brings alot more to the field in terms of running and receiving to this team. We just have a helluva trio here. Felix is obviously a strong bet of mine based on my opinion of his worth.

5. Terrence Newman
This was the toughest player to choose from. Like my Felix choice, I wanted to Martelius Bennett and that would of been based on my opinion as to where I think his worth is to our success. I chose newman because I think with our other guys being still a little green, we need Newman and his ball skills because without him, I think the whole premise of our attack style 3-4 defense would cave in and become that bend don't break defense out of necessity, and we all know where that defense takes us.

Anyways, a little thought going into our training camp this year. I really feel we can have something special this year. We can honestly go strong with a playoff win and be done with it til next year and still call it progress, but I do not think it is entirely crazy to say we could have a superbowl contender here.
I know my question last year was how could a team of such talent not go far into the playoffs and for two years? When the talent is on the field, I have to question the coaching staff and that starts with Wade. Do I think Wade needs to be replaced? I thought that he did before this season started, but he is our coach and I will stand behind him. I do however feel that if he does not get us to a very hard fought divisional game or the conference championship, then he should be replaced for next year.

All five members of the starting O line. Seriously. Everything else is in place, both offensively and defensively. We go as the O line goes. Period.

1. Romo...How is his psyche? Does he have what it takes to shake off all the negativity and scrutiny he has received? Will he be able to shake the December blues? Can he get us into the playoffs and actually win a game or two or three?

2. Gurode...the offense and it's flow all starts with him and his snaps. If he can fix his erratic snaps, then our offensive flow should be much improved.

3. Flozell...hopefully he will be healthy next season. We need him to be able to protect Romo's backside. Also, hopefully he can cut his penalties in half. IMO, if he is healthy, it will go a long way towards reducing his penalty numbers.

4. Spencer...We know all about Ware, but Spencer is still a huge question mark. Can he effectively replace Ellis and live up to the potential he had when we picked him in the 1st round.

5. Jones...Can he remain healthy? If so, look for him to give our offense a huge homerun hitter and our return game some much needed juice. IMO, he is our biggest X-Factor on offense.

I agree with your choices except I would put Barber at number 4. I agree that Felix has an opportunity to step up this year but I still think that when we get close to the goal line that Barber will be the man. :starspin

I think this pretty much nails it for me.

Maybe switch Newman with Felix and possibly bump Felix to 6 and put Barber in there at 5 over him.

As goes the O-line so goes the Cowboys

I would concur that the o-line is the heart of any offensive unit,it all starts up front. It could be also said that the front seven on the defensive side of the ball will be very important also_On an individual basis hopefully Ratliff/Spencer et al step it up to take some pressure off Ware.

I'm taking a different approach to this. It's obvious that Romo, Ware, Witten, the offensive line, et al, are very important to the success of this team, but those guys are expected to be a big part of our success, so just naming them here seems sort of redundant to me.

Therefore, I'm going to give you 5 players who, if they perform as we HOPE they will, they just might put the Cowboys over the top. They are:

1. Miles Austin - Everyone keeps wondering how this offense will operate after the departure of the player, and to tell the truth, I'm a bit curious myself, though I'm not panicky about it. I believe that there is some truth to the stories and opinions going around that Owens has lost a step which is perhaps why the Cowboys struggled a bit at times last year on offense, and if that is indeed the case, this team just might need another player to step up and fill in for some of that lost production, especially on deep throws. If Austin can do this and give us a couple of long plays a game, that could make a big difference in the success of our offense.

2. Gerald Sensabaugh - I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm tired of seeing a serious lack of production at the strong safety position. I'm also tired of seeing big plays given up because of this team's refusal to admit that, yeah, the strong safety has to cover guys too. But hopefully, all that has changed with the addition of Sensabaugh who, at least from mini-camp and OTA reports, looks like he can actually cover, and if that's the case, maybe we can get better in an area that this defense so desperately needs: interceptions.

3. Felix Jones - There is SO much talent in this guy. Had he remained healthy for all of 2008, I believe he would have easily ran away with rookie of the year honors. As Hostile demonstrated in another thread regarding offensive formations, Jones is an obviously dynamic player, so much so that it would be criminal NOT to move him all over the formation in an effort to find and exploit matchup problems for the defense. This guy reminds me of Westbrook in that respect, and I believe that if he stays healthy, he will be able to do just about anything he wants to do on a football field.

4. Anthony Spencer - I know he's not Ware, but he's definately shown flashes of playmaking ability. He already plays the run very well, and that's nothing to casually dismiss, but the Cowboys need him to develop into at least a decent pass rusher to give Ware and company some help at attacking the QB from the strong side. If he can at least approach Ellis' sack total from last season, and I know that's a big "if," the Cowboys pass rush should be just as dominate as it was last year.

5. Mike Jenkins - Scandrick is for real. I have no doubts whatsoever about his ability to play, and I expect him to play even more and be even better this year than last. Jenkins, on the other hand, gives me room for pause...even if it's an ever so slight pause. I feel that he should be just as good as Scandrick, and my gut says that he probably is, but there's a tiny part of me that's worried about him. Hopefully, Jenkins will completely erase any and all doubt about his ability and desire and play like we all expect him to. With Newman, Scandrick, and what I hope to be a guy who makes me wonder why the hell I ever had any doubt, this secondary could just be one of the best in the NFL. Couple that with our pass rush and damn, it just gives me chills.

Can we just fast forward to the pre-season already?

Agree!

Why worry about players that are proven, like Romo, Ware, etc.?

We need to worry about the oline and the backups! Same goes for the dline.

Those guys do their jobs and the skill players will come through.

I think any list with Romo on it should have Roy Williams on it as well. I think both of their seasons and level of success will be tied to how well they play off each other. Sure we have other options in the passing game, but for this offense to be as dynamic as it can and to open up the running game, I really feel like Williams needs to be a star.

With that said, here is my list:

1/a. Tony Romo
1/b. Roy Williams

2. Flozell Adams
3. Left Guard
4. Outside linebacker opposite Demarcus Ware
5. Andre Gurode

My god look at the spacing of their DLINE... How did we not gash them for 300 yards rushing? With those gaps it should be an automatic 8 yards.

Felix on a draw would have KILLED that :(

Outstanding post. From the first caveat to the end of the list. I will just piggy back this opinion.

You posts suggests to me you are the only responder thinking like myself. So sorry for you.

Starting QB on any team has to be #1.

#2 on this team for this year has to be Roy. Running the ball a little more and spreading around the passes is all well in good. At the end of the day we neeeeed Roy to step up and play his best. I suspect that'll be just good enough.

#3 Has to be Adams. He'll be 34, coming off an injury filled year and plays the most critical OL position. He's our ultimate cross your fingers and pray guy. He has all my confidence when healthy. Let us pray.

These first three are critical for us to be a playoff team. These next two can put us over the hump.

#4
Felix Jones. In his limited time he looked like a real game changer. He can be one of the more indefensible players in the league.

#5 Jenkins or Scandrick - If even one can play as well as we hope opposite Newman, we can be dominate on defense.
