The Cowboys had Livings sign a re-structured deal, but it was never handed in to the league office.

If the Cowboys take a guard early, Livings could possibly be released, per Nick Eatman.

To be honest, I've seen teams restructure a guy and still release him post june first before. The player actually gets more money than they would have if they were just released, and the team gets more immediate cap relief.

I don't believe the math works out that way.

It would make no sense from a sal cap point.

He was getting the following before the reported restructure:

13.......1.7m........700k........2.4m
14.......3.4m........700k........4.1m
15.......4.4m........700k........5.1m
16.......4.75.........700k........5.45m

If we cut him now, the cap hit is 2.8m instead of 2.4m. Not sure why we would do that. HE was far from our worst lineman last year. Probably second best.

If they did do the restructure and we cut him now, it's like a 2.7m additional hit this year.

Even cutting him June 1st would do little to really help us out.

Let's talk about the elephant in the building, Doug Free.

Cutting him wouldn't be for cap reasons. It would be because they replaced him with a better player. They didn't do the restructure to keep the cap hit from being more.

Why would he be released? He's making under a million next year in base salary.

He's actually making 1.7 million in base which is the reason for the thread. Cowboys never filed his restructure with the nfl. If they draft an OG high, I would expect he takes the fall. Or if they sign a vet like Slauson or Moore.

When you are in a tight cap situation, I think the last thing you want to do is add more money to the cap. Livings was probably the second best lineman we had a year ago behind Smith. You really are going to cut him, add money to the cap and then pay another player to replace him? Doesn't make a ton of sense.

Why wouldn't you just get rid of the guy that is making about 9m too much this year, Doug Free?

Things won't be tight once they have Romo and Spencer signed and figure out what to do with Free. Cutting Livings would also be minimal, especially after June 2 they would actually gain a little.

Smith, especially in the second half of last season.
