Nate Newton observations on guard Ronald Leary.

  • He looked OK in team. He looked even better in pass-rush drills. That’s combination single-blocking and games, when the defensive line is stunting. He did a tremendous job. He punched well. He moved his feet well. He didn’t let people get into his zone.
  • I think out of six or seven pass rushes, he got beat one time on a spin move. That’s where he let a guy get into his body and didn’t punch, but after that, he handled his business. He had great knee bend for a first day back. He did a great job.
  • Now this kid has to put back-to-back practices together. He has to be more consistent, get into his playbook.

I was listening to Nate's review of Leary yesterday. He loves Leary. He went into a lot of detail about how Leary could really bend and get low. Nate said that Leary has a great "punch" and power.

Nate also reviewed Livings saying that he couldn't get down in his stance properly and was playing to "high". That's vertical, not dope. This review is about the past couple of practices, not last year.

Broaddus is also talking about Livings' lack of knee bend right now. And that Leary looks really good although a tad rusty.

Yes, here's what he said about Livings in another article.

"What about Nate Livings? I have nothing against this guy. I don’t really know him, but he’s lost his knee bend. Until he can get his knees back in shape and get some knee bend, all those reps should go to other guys – David Arkin, Ronald Leary and when Mackenzy Bernadeau gets back.

"Livings has not looked good. They say he’s coming off a knee situation. His knees are not very strong, but he’s had a whole offseason to get that corrected and part of this training camp. As far as I’m seeing right now, you should give those reps to a young guy so they can get better."

Sounds like Livings should get the boot. Even without the whole knee bend situation, I want our drafted projects like Arkin, Leary and Killer getting reps instead of some old stop gap, loser.

Who knows this OL may turn out to be better than our critics think.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, but I truly believe the powers that be of this franchise want Leary, Costa, Arkin, WHOMEVER to beat out Livings and Berny. They (and Kowalski's injury) are giving Arkin every possible shot to win the RG job. I keep hearing how he and Free seem to be working well together on that right side.

I want the guys who get out there and show they can handle the job be it starter or backup. For me I'm not ready to kick any of them to the curb until they get a chance in pre season to show themselfs. If Livings can go out in pre season and prove he should be on the team great. It should be all about performing

I'm sure they want all of these guys working and fighting for position. Nate Livings just got back and Mackenzy Bernadeau is out right now. How this all plays out I would hope is determined by their play nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah I'm all for the nobody getting handed a job approach, but you have to be realistic to an extent, it does the team so much better if a young guy can get reps and grow into his role and solidify it for a few years. Now obviously if Livings outshines the rest of the interior guys you give him a starting spot, but if it's close between him and the three of Arkin, Leary and Kowalski, I say you give the edge to the younger guy.

Livings actually is my pick to be cut. I'd rather have Arkin, Killer and Leary all make the team with Bernadeau and Fred/Costa as the C's.

Leary has been out there since last year and the only bad things I've read or heard is lack of experience at guard and that he's gonna have knee problems at some point down the road. Haven't heard anyone question his ability.

It does the team better by putting the best you have out there. Young guys are getting a lot of reps if they earn the job great I'm happy that they did but making claims of stunting growth? Most are not rookies any longer and if they want a spot on this team then go earn it. As for Livingand Bernadeau same goes for them. If they go out and earn a spot be it as a starter or back up great because it was earned. I'm well past the point of pet cats, I want a solid OL and I don't care who is out there as long as they perform.

From all I've seen they actually want Bernadeau to be the RG but he isn't cooperating with all the injuries. Leary at LG for sure.

Leary and Arkin as the starting guards week one? Not as crazy of a thought as it used to be...

This.

I can honesty see a starting five composed of Smith, Leary, Costa, Fred, and Free. Cook and Livings could be gone.
