What we need from Cassell is a few more plays. That's all. We don't need exceptional play, and that's good because he's unlikely to give that. Make about two more plays in the Saints game and we win it. Make a few more plays in the Falcons game and it might be totally different. Hopefully the defense will come out guns blazin' against Eli and get the dumb face rolling quickly.

With Weeden teams only needed to defend the LOS and maybe 15 yards beyond it. If we can hit enough vertical plays then teams are forced to defend the whole field.

Is it, as you say...just a few more plays? Perhaps.

So, basically, Weedon was told to be cautious, and he did what he was told. Now he is benched and another guy is in being told to not be so cautious. I am not defending Weedon, although I don't think he is as bad as many here say, but these kinds of contradictions justify his being pissed. No one likes being punished for doing what they are told to do. Yet is is common in all types of business. Someone has to be he scapegoat

He's one of the worst starting QBs of the modern era of the NFL.

if you arent smart enough to do what needs to be done with the game on the line and instead just do what you're told for the sake of doing what you're told...i dont want you even on my team.

This is why Tony is so important...and is the difference in JG being involved and Tony running the offense, which weeden wasnt capable of.

People are making way too much out of how Weeden was supposedly coached. Does a staff limit the offense more when their starting QB and WR are out? Sure. That doesn't mean they tell the QB explicitly to not try and make any plays downfield. Coaches put in a game plan and players are expected to play within it. And of course they were more conservative, given the circumstances. Coaches can only do so much from the sidelines. Players are still required to go out and make the plays necessary. Weeden either wasn't capable or willing to do that.
its because his brain is so slow he cant process more than 1-2 options prior to the 5 yard line

Weeden didn't read his progressions...he simply looked for the checkdown and threw it. It was effective when teams hadn't seen it the first time but as it occurred more frequently, those 10-15 yd gains that Dunbar was getting became 3 yarders.

Too cautious is an understatement. He dropped back and immediately threw to the check off receiver. He did absolutely no reading of the defense, He di not go threw his progressions but instead hit the dump off receiver within a matter of a couple of seconds. There is no way he had time to read the defense.

Okay. Which backup QB would you pluck off of any other team's roster right now to lead the Cowboys in Romo's absence? What gems do other teams have sitting on their bench?

Any of these would be better than Weeden:Colt McCoy
Josh McCown
RGIII/Kirk Cousins
Tavaris Jackson
Johnny Manziel
Matt Moore
Mark Sanchez
Matt Schaub
Geno Smith
Drew Stanton

So, Weeden didnt take chances because the coaches told him not to....

....tell me again how Joseph Randle stopped jumping over the pile at the goal line when the coaches told him to.

So, either we are wishing one guy would have gone against the coaches wishes and punishing another for doing just that, or we are blaming the coaches for punishing a player for listening to them. Which is it?

The Jason Garrett culture of absolving yourself from blame...

Jason was a QB COACH before he became an OC for the Cowboys... I thought he was a genius, but apparently he can only get guys like Brad Johnson, Kitna and Weeden..

have to go QB in RD 1 imo. Chances are Tony doesn't make it through a full season ever again.

The coaches likely told Weeden to protect the ball and not lose the game.

They didn't tell him to ignore the WRs regardless of if they are open, and instead check down every throw and dump off to a RB or TE for 2 yards a pop. Being careful with the ball is not the same thing as not taking any chances at all.

If Cassell can figure out how to throw the ball for first downs and not short and hope the run for the first down i'll be happy. Weeden may have been told to protect the ball but you have to be good at situation football in this league or it doesn't matter who's back there.
