Nebraska deserves blame for hiring Callahan

Honestly, what did Nebraska fans expect? Callahan should have never been hired for the job. He inherited Gruden's Superbowl bound Raiders team that was loaded with talent. After that, it was Callahan's mishandling of his players that led to the decline of the Raiders. Did the Nebraska AD really think a pure west coast offense was going to work in the state of Nebraska? It's bad enough their AD sought former Cowboys DC Mike Zimmer as their head coach first, who declined the job.

Is the Nebraska program dead? If their best candidate was Mike Zimmer a few years ago, how will they be able to recruit someone worthwhile. Will Tom Osbourne come back? It's pretty obvious Callahan is done.

People probably thought OU would never come back about 10 years ago when they were going 6-6, 5-5, 3-8, 4-8, and 5-6

Good programs come back. Nebraska just hired a bad coach in Callahan and stuck with him way too long.

Very true. As much criticism as Mack Brown has received over the years, we weren't winning 10 games every year in Austin during the early part of the 90s.

Yep Mackovic lost to one of those Blake teams that went 3-8. And tied with Burbon's team and I think Texas hadn't won 10 games in something like 20 years when Mack won 10 his first time.

Sometimes sticking with a guy you know will win 7 or 8 games is better than going to the inconsistent guy. If Nebraska stayed with Solich they would be fighting for the North every year and winning 7 or 8 games.

I'm not just an OU fan but an actual alum and I will completely admit that OU got lucky as hell. When Stoops was brought to OU, several people had doubts. He wasn't a big named coach by any means. He was the DC at Florida and that school was associated with Spurrier not their defense or Bob Stoops. Stoops wasn't booed or anything like that. Everyone respected him as an assistant coach but no one thought he would resurrect our program especially so soon. We sort of settled on him because the program was dead at that point thanks to hiring a horrible candidate in John Blake. A big reason Blake was hired was due to his personality and yes...the fact he was Black because OU was trying to be progressive and ahead of its time by giving a chance to a young African American man. I do fault OU for that. There is nothing wrong with being progressive but they should have hired someone more deserving regardless of his skin color. Blake was not qualified to be a head coach let alone a head coach at a program like Oklahoma. So the OU head coaching job became very lackluster after Blake. We had no choice but to take Stoops because we couldn't get a coach with a name.

OU won a national championship in Stoops second year in which he was still coaching John Blake's players. Ou didn't even have an adequate number of receivers or corners and had to convert running backs to fit those positions; yeah they won a NC that year! Stoops is an amazing coach but no one at OU expected that. Sorry but I juts don't expect Nebraska to get lucky like OU did and win with a relatively unheralded assistant coach in their second year.
