Any thoughts out there on stores to buy from (for best return policies), or online mattress manufactures like Tufts and Needle or Casper?

Here's my deal - i have a large disc herniation I've been working on (avoiding surgery) between L5/S1. I want a firm mattress, probably an 8 out of 10 firm. Having said that I really need a place where I can buy something, and in good faith test it out and if unfortunately its not the right one, exchange it and keep trying until I find the fit. Not looking to scam, just want to get the right one.

Appreciate any thoughts, thanks in advance!

Mattresses are really personal. Do you at least know what kind you want? I wanted to try out a foam mattress and I bought this from Walmart:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-12-Theratouch-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple-Sizes/10086752

I initially was skeptical, but they have a great return policy. Anything you buy online can be returned to any Walmart store. My sister in law has a real deal Tempurpedic, and it ran north of 4k. She said this wasn't as firm, but said it was comparable to her's. It was the best $300 I have ever spent.
I don't expect it to last more than 2-3 years, but I have extremely happy with it.

Hi CB - apologies for the late response and thanks for replying. I hadn't considered WalMart.

My ex had a tempurpedic and it killed my back. My brother has one and he swears by it for his back problems. As you said they are really personal, so I was just looking for retailers people have found good luck with. I know CostCo has the best return policy in that its basically limitless if you use the thing in good faith and don't dirty it up, but I need to see if they have any I can check out and lay out for a good 20 minutes or so. I think I am going to stay away from the disruptive online places (tufts and needle, etc).

My other issue with memory foam is the lack of bounce-back, which I find enjoyable (I need all the help I can get ;) )

Thanks again!

If you like the bounce-back, then look into a latex mattress. It's like memory foam, but bouncier.
