alright im thinking about getting him a book, usualy something about science or religion him and i can argue about. Last year i bought him a dvd about the string theory which he liked. So here are some of the types of books my dad likes, i was thinking maybe someone could recomend some books. and im not trying to offend anyone, from a religion standpoint or a republican/democrat backround. so here are some categories.

-global warming
-anything ripping on george bush
-short stories about hunting and fishing
-books about religion, trying to prove or disprove stories from them
-evolution

thank you.

Holy Blood, Holy Grail

Before there was a book/movie The Divinci Code there was that book. It is even mentioned in the Divinci Code as being basically the be all end all start of the Grail books.

You may wish to speak/PM this question to a user named Hoov, If memory serves this is the exact type of thing that interests him and I think he has read quite a few religious books.

Well, you could get any book about the "Scopes Trial" which was the basis for a great old movie, "Inherit the Wind"

It was about a teacher who is brought up on charges for teaching evolution in Tennessee, where it was against the law to do so, the trial took on national importance...and pitted William Jennings Bryant against Clarence Darrow.

Great stuff.

The only Bush-bashing book I really enjoyed was 'Liars' by Al Franken. Stay away from Michael Moore. The guy's an awful writer.

I'll recommend Longitudes and Attitudes by Thomas Friedman. Friedman is no lover of George Bush, but this book is a thoughtful look at the US role in the world post 9/11

If you want something that will look at God, Man and religion from a primarily christian (biblical) perspective -(as opposed to eastern point of view) but will also allow for science and logic and will be good for debates you can choose anything by Harry Fosdick.

He was a great writer and was the pastor of a church in NY City that was the envy of all pastors in his time. The man was brilliant and way ahead of his times. Off the top of my head i would say that he wrote most of his books 1920's to 1940's so you would have to go to a book barn or used book store to find his stuff.

But he was a very liberal pastor who took the bible as a spiritually inspired book, but would not beleive that it was offered down to us from heaven on a golden rope so to speak.

"the man from nazareth" is a classic and was a great read for perspective on jesus parables and arguements with the pharisees.

"modern interpretation of the bible" is another one that may intrest your father.

If you go to borders today you will find so much in the religion section and a lot is garbage. plus there will be a lot of books influenced by the new age movement which intrests me but i dont think it is what you are looking for.

You cant go wrong with Fosdick though, his work will force you to ask the tough questions and tackle some real issues in the bible that alot of people wont dare address and he does it without presenting too much bias one way or another.

..."The Pagan Christ" by Tom Harpur.

Reviews the Christian origins through historical artifacts and word origins of the many biblical stories and traditions.

Some of it is dubious at best, but much of it is very sound. When I was in the Middle East I took time to visit and view some of the artifacts themselves. The Egyptian angle is one of the more compelling arguments.

I won't give the rest away.

Nice -- outstanding gifting Juke. I was searching for the name of the movie in class the other day but couldn't come up with it.

thank you.

Have you checked out Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel (won the Pultizer a few years ago) or his more recent Collapse? Both are focused on why cultures succeed or fail. They fit well with an interest in evolution and are great reads.

If I can't think of anything else, that's what my pop is getting.
